I admit, I'm a bit hooked.

See, I grew up in a affluent neighborhood where that kinda stuff goes a long way, and all I could say was well, "We MIGHT be related to so and so." Names like William Bradford (the guy who INVENTED Thanksgiving) often get lost in the mix. Everyone knows Plymouth Colony, he was the Governor there. Came over on the Mayflower. But, I didn't know that when I was a kid. I knew that we MIGHT be related to Edgar Allen Poe, and also Admiral De Ruyter of Holland, but the stuff I have found and PROVEN is much more interesting.

Henrick Ruiter, Lt. Col., Roger's Rangers. Revolutionary War ... fought for the Queen. A Canadian Loyalist.

Just a couple weeks ago I took a trip up to Quebec, and I found where his settlement was in Canada and met with some distant relatives. I also found the long lost link for my surname. My great, times 4, grandparents on my Dad's side. Stephen and Silence Woods. Someday I will trace it back to what boat we came over on. Looks like it was a LONG time ago.

Just tonight I found Silence's parents. Her maiden name was Emerson, born in 1783, and I think Ralph Waldo Emerson is her first cousin.

So, as it turns out, Edgar Allen Poe may not be true, I haven't disproven it ... but we have another famous author, direct line, nobody knew about.

Pretty cool stuff, IMO.

Yeah, we have done our geneology all the way back to sometime in the 1200's in Scotland...Extremely interesting stuff, seeing all the places your family comes from...

I started genealogy back when I was about 8 or 9 years old. My maternal grandmother and her sisters had done a bunch of work on that side, but I have had to do it all on my dad's side.

No one famous for me except a cousin of Daniel Boone. Well, maybe royalty, but as anyone who has done genealogy knows, there are some seriously optimistic family trees out there. I have a gg grandmother that I found in someone else's research that he had linked back to the English royal family. Of course he had at least two dozen unconfirmed links in there. I kept his "research" to check on because the first few generations look potentially viable.

I'm quite interested actually. I made my own tree using GENI, upto my grandparents so that future generations in my family can see and update. It's available online and it's free.

My grandmother (dads side) & grandfather (moms side) were both orphans in the early 1900's so the trail kinda stopped cold. :(
