View Full Version : [guide] Player Market Tips for New Players

I thought I'd write something up rather quick to help new players get more out of the player market. These are based on my own observations, and I am not an administrator or developer, so take them as what they are.

General:
1. Avoid weapons/armor/spells that have a maximum effect value of 1 or 2. Many are the equivalent of the free items, or only slightly better. They will be rarely an upgrade that helps for any length of time, so avoid wasting either the EP or the auction slot.

2. Avoid common mage armor. It is worse than regular armor, and has no benifit to magic skills, but hinders strength, and doesn't protect as well.

Buying:
3. Early on, getting random loot from battle is your friend - it only costs you 3 EP, and you're likely to pull something at least as good as what you can afford on the market, if not better. Plus you get experience.

4. Don't be afraid to buy non-core items from the market if they help you. Buying a useful mastery or jewelry item can help make you more effective.

5. Do an item search to determine effectiveness versus rarity before you buy. Sometimes you will find common intems that are just as effective as uncooms or uncommons as good as rares - particularly with attack items, armor, and jewelry. This means you can save EP by buying the more common item.

6. Be sure that you will still have the needed EP to win an auction once you've bid on it. Paying the penalty just sets you back further.

7. Don't just pick the first auction you see for an item to buy from. Search for all auctions for that & similar items, and see if there is one for sale that is cheaper, has no other bidders, ends sooner, or simply has a better ad line. Some sellers do not choose the minimum reserve on items.

Selling:
8. When you go to sell something check to see how many of them are on the market, and if they are a bunch with no bids, look at soemthing else. This will help you avoid selling junk no one wants, allowin to use that auction slot to generate EP's for yourself.

9. Try and sell things that are the best item of a rarity that use the skill & slot that they take up. For example: tarnished > corroded, and treated > warped. Sell the better grade of things within the same rarity.

10. Most common items won't sell. They are common, and available in the shops, and people often get them, and post them. You may see a run on certian higher demand items like large axes & largeswords, but by and large, there's little demand for these items.

11. You can sell mulitple items if you're of a certain level or a subscriber, so take advantage of your slots. I'd recommend spacind your sale start times out a bit, so you get exposure at different times when things roll to the first page.

12. Few people use more than 1 day for auctions. Good reasons to do so are that you're going to be off-line for a day or more, so you can get higher bids, or it's a coveted item. Realize you only get one slot, so keep turning it over with one-day sales for maximum effect.

Good luck in the market, and stop by my little bazaar when you have a moment!

great guide fellow fbg :) a few things I would add..... not only look for one of your items with no auctions....but if there ARE auctions on one of your items look and see if there are bids.... if there is only 1 of the item up for bids and that auction has 3 bids there is a good chance yours will sell.

the best advice is dont get discouraged.... if something doesnt sell the firt time it doesnt mean it wont sell ever.... but if you have other valuable items and dont see several auctions for it try something new....

also keep an eye on how many people are onlne when you are online...and try to match your auctions with the times that there are the most people here. most auctions dont get bids til late ... when the auction reaches page 1 you want alot of people lookng at it.

lastly get to level 5.... you get 2 auction chances there doubling your chance of selling something. also by subscribing you get several new auction slots.... a big advantage.

lastly keep in mind 1 big sale will allow you to fight quite a few battles.... I would suggest if you get an item that helps your character....unless you see it as a critical piece.....sell it in the market...... you have a TON of items waiting to be won in prize codes ...and many battles will be better than having 1 good item... Im not saying that you shouldnt build your character Im suggesting the quickest way to do that is to have more everpoints,,,,,and the quickest way to get those is through the market.....

disclaimer....these are only my opinions others may differ..... its part of life ...deal with it :D ;)

Never forget to look for the prices in item shop.
Some people bid higher than the cost in item shop...

This came up in another thread:

What to save for the player market:

-All UR's are worth holding for the player market if they don't fit your needs.

-I'd hold any rares you don't want as well, as long as they aren't made from bronze or pine.

All UR's are worth holding for the player market if they don't fit your needs.
i assume youre jking, but then again knowing you i dont think you are, theres lots of URs out there that would give you less than what you would get from the shops (if you managed to get a bid) making it completely not worth it. you could try putting the minimum at around 85 ep but you still wouldnt be getting that much more than from the shops so its best to sell rares at about the same amount and then if you have nothing else that you think you can try your luck with those URs.

I stand by what I wrote. I will not joke about advice in the newbie forum. I'm addressing your points I bolded.

The breakeven point for auctioning a UR in the market versus what the shop will give you is 63 for a free account: 80% of 63 = 50.40 I'm not sure where your 85 EP number comes from.

Your use of "lots" at this moment is erroneous. There are currently (as of 10/30/07) 1,724 UR items. The VAST majority of those items cannot be listed as cheaply as 63 EP, because their minimum is above that:
- All spells
- All armor
- Almost all weapons (some brawling/dagger may be below)
- All debuffs
- Most masteries (there may be a few below this, but I don't think so)
- Jewelry of +5 or better

So your "lots" of UR's is relly jewelry that is +3 & +4, some low-damage, high-speed weapons, and low-end scrolls & potions. Howver, a lot of that jewelry is still sought after, and will generate bids. Off hte top of my head, I would estimate that fully 90% or more of the UR's in the game cannot - at this moment - return less than they bring from the shops if they are succesfully auctioned.

By and large, as long as new players don't put up UR's for prices under 63 EP where they get less than what the shop will give them, they should keep them and hope to get more - plus getting utility out of the item if possible.

i know that you need a 63 ep minimum to get 50 ep but using your auction slot for that is just stupid when you could actually make a PROFIT on another item. people do not put items on the player market to simply get bids, they do it to make ep. i got my 85 so that you could get a reasonable PROFIT from putting it up for auction.

anyway the last time i was selling +5 jewelry the minimum was at 45...umm wth is up with that? the two URs that i currently have up had their minimums at 54 (which i raised). yes the jewelry would get multiple bids and go well above the minimum but its still best to raise the reserve a bit. anyway when it comes down to selling a rare for 100 ep or selling an ultrarare for 100 ep, go for the rare as you will make a bigger PROFIT!!!!

now youre thinking well ppl can just put items at 64 ep and gain 1 ep!!! well that would be almost as stupid as selling an item for less than what the shops would give.

Okay, since this is a tips thread, you should not putting down someone else's opinion.
If you want to shout out your opinion Noob, make it without provoking or insist whose opinion are the best way to go.
From what i see, there is nothing wrong with what Steve said, especially if you put your attention on this :

Your use of "lots" at this moment is erroneous. There are currently (as of 10/30/07) 1,724 UR items. The VAST majority of those items cannot be listed as cheaply as 63 EP, because their minimum is above that:

You can give just an additional tips since your tips will work in someway and might be suit with someone (without putting down or insisting that yours are the most correct one or should be followed your way).

If you are able to see the bigger picture what Steve has said, then you should understand what he pointed at, and he didn't let your tips down at all.

Darin

I'm sure that this can be interpret as making profit. So, there is nothing wrong with it, and your tips will work as well in someway and might suit to some condition. So without putting down Steve's tips, you could just add your tips. Both of your tips are complement to each other. Steve's got the bigger picture, and Noob's got the detail case's tips. That's it.

i did put my own tips: dont sell URs that have the same reserve as a rare that you have in your inventory, try selling the rare and all your other items first. and dont put URs for lower than 80 (or 85 if youre feeling lucky) so that you can get some ep in your pocket. steve was putting me down simply because i gave those tips and because i tried to help noobs by telling them not to waste auction slots.

soldierb11

I wish we had more leeway in how we price an item, several of my auctions havent sold cuz the price is obviously too high. for instance the minimum i could list for was 60ep, now if i could lower that to 30 or so maybe it would sell and i wouldnt have to sell it for 5 to the store

I simply want to make sure that new players get accurate basic advice. I'm not putting anyone down - just trying to clear up some things, like the us of "lots" and the 85 EP number. Since this is a pinned thread, I'm trying to keep it fairly updated, and keeping the info quality even higher than I normally do.

I really had no idea where the 85 came from; it wasn't clear. If I can't figure out where you generate a number, I'm pretty sure that most new players won't. The profit explanation in your original post would've clarified a ton.

We vets need to be extra careful posting in this forum when we use numbers that are rules of thumb for us without explaining them, because invariably, someone will ask "Where'd that number come from?"

Thanks for the sound advice.
I just signed up and was wondering what the LIFE value means. Mine is 152, I think. How can I get myself as PUMPED UP for battle as possible?

Also, When starting off, what's the best strategy to stay alive. Should I align myself with a core group of players? What' the goal here? AND, how do I get the most points per battle?

Great - thanks for all the useful tips & info.

Just a quick question about the buying/bidding process.
Once you make a bid and you (before the auction closes) withdraw you bid?
For instance with the selling of an item, you are allowed to delete the item if you see it's just not selling - I just wondered if you could do the same with the actual bid.

This is a good guide to market for new players. The part with not buying common heavy or mage armor is significant. These items have negative effects and no bonuses. So regular armor is better at lower levels.

FBGstevec

A couple notes:

1. You may NOT cancel an auction bid. You can change the amount of the bid. You can change your bid to the minimum, and hope to not get the item if someone outbids you.

2. You CAN equip an item up for auction. If it sells, it will be removed from your active lsot. This will allow you to move another item into that slot, which will free up an inventory spot so you can get new items. Of course, you need to have soemthing to move into the new active slot to free it up.

3. Common Abbreviations:
C: Common
UC: UnCommon
R: Rare
UR: Ultra Rare

Note there can be multiple grades of UR items with increasing shop costs, powers & reserve limits.

I think the auction shouldn't be a secret one. It should be an open one where instead of the reserved price bidded prices should be shown. You see, I put my bid on one item and couldn't bid on another one because of not being sure to be left with the desired bid. For example i had 200 ep. I placed bi of 100 ep on Item 'A'. On next page i saw another item 'B' which was better but could not place my bid more than 100 because of 10 ep penalty (if i win first auction than i'm left with only 100 ep). At the end i couldn't win either:(

Good luck in the market, and stop by my little bazaar when you have a moment!

thank you for your help

i was wonderin if u could tell me how often rares and ultra rares drops thx

There is no 'formula' or % for how often they appear (that the DEV's have released)... i.e. no "ever X # of wins you will receive a Rare or UR, or UR's drop 1% of the time".

The only 'formula' is:
Commons drop more frequently than UC
UC drop more frequently than Rare
Rare drop more frequently than UR.

Can someone please tell me what's the most affective way to assign Skill Points? And if I give "Armor" alone a bunch of points worth it, or do I also have to assign points to either "Heavy Armor" or "Mage Armor" also in order to receive the benefits?

Also, what's the deal with so many weapon slots? If I have just one really good weapon, can I just fill that in my slots? Or will I lose attacks unless I have all the slots filled?

If you have one slot filled, keep in mind that your items are like a card deck. You could draw an empty "card" and not be able to attack. Also, having 9 empty slots would add 9 to your one weapon's delay. If it had a delay of 5, it would become a delay of 14. That makes for a poor chance to hit because even when that weapon card is "drawn", you could still miss your attack and have to wait those turns again for another chance.

I have some items that are rather uncommon and have tried to auction them, I've also had some NEVER get any bids at all even though I just used the minimum generated bid.

I can see this happening IF there were some other market for the weapons but if there were, then the price at auction should be allowed to drop to become competitive with the other markets. and when I have to get rid of something nice but not that usable to me, its downright PAINFUL to dump it for the pittance of 5 ep or some such.. I'd almost like the option of destroying it.

Well, the info from this thread are rather outdated. The reality is, most items that is not UR will be difficult to attract any bids on the market. If you think about it from the buyer's point of view, they can either buy a medicore weapon from auction and upgrade to a better one later, or they can go straight to purchasing the better one without buying the mediocre one in between.

Whenever the mods get around to posting it. I have noticed that it generally happens late at night in my case. It also depends on whether or not the post is relevant or frivolous...no credit for uninformative drivel.

What an amazingly unrewarding manual job..... surely you would lose MOD's like they were going out of style. Must be automated with a manual review for people who post too often.... has to be.... surely!

I note that a number of newbie players have been complaining they cannot afford items. I have just posted a couple of very affordable secondaries on the auctions at minimum prices for those impoverished beginners and will be posting more soon (check out my full list under Player market forum "Bargain basement").

Search for all auctions for that & similar items, and see if there is one for sale that is cheaper!

seems to me that min price that you are unable to change is not influenced by common market economy principles - even if you (and other owners of some item) fail to sell it million times, the price won't go down (and you are unable to make it lower) ... same is true if 10 identical items are on sale at the same time ...

i mean, everybody is selling their items for min possible price, therefore the prices are the same across the board ... except for a few popular/lusted items ...

i wish there were more headroom for little players like me to buy, sell, engage, etc - as battling is only half the fun ...

Great thanks for all the useful tips & info.

but now i can't auction some item i have 13 battles. :o

I forget how far into the game you have to be, but you have to have a certain number of battles under your belt before you can auction items. I think it's something like 100 battles, but it may be more like 50.
