Little Troll the Halfling was sad. She was always sad when it rained, and the current down pour of a mid fall shower did nothing to help her mood. A brown lock of hair was tossed from her eyes as her chin came to rest up on the palm of her hand again.

A sigh tossed her shoulders, crinkled the leather armor, and fogged up the window in front of her. “Booored.” She commented quietly to herself and pulled her eyes from the water-soaked street. The shop around her was nothing fabulous. Just her parent’s pottery wagon. Jars and bottles, bowls and plates laid about awaiting for some customer to come buy them. “I have got to get out of here.” The little woman commented to herself and slowly stood up.

The boards creaked under her feet and the woman’s eyes went wide. “No no.” She told herself quietly. “We must be sneaky.” She scolded her feet. There was no pressing or urgent need for her to sneak around. Well none other then the deep dark over whelming need to be silent.

The next step was louder then the first. A frown entered into her face and a shake to her head. “Production!” she cursed loudly and then her hands clapped over her mouth.

In the distance a soft grunt and snore of her father within the master office could be heard. A grunt, a gurgle, but then it returned to silence and the halfling looked about again. “To freedom.” she whispered to herself before slipping to the door and pulling.

It failed her. The door refused to open at first. Stuck shut with swelling from the rain, the woman cursed again, “PRODUCTION.” Shis time it was a bit louder and the snore and grunt turned into a confused mutter. “PRODUCTION.” She repeated, all the while, the top of the door came jarred lose and started to bang against frame. “Oh work! Will you?” She finally commanded before the door was thrown open and into her face with a thud.

Bleeding and muttering the woman gargled a few times to make sure her front teeth where still in place before slipping out the door and into the world beyond it. The door behind her was left slightly a jar, should she need to make good her escape back into the safety and realm of what she knew...

The Fighting Faeries had no sooner departed from the Don't Drop Inn before a new group rolled into the courtyard, a motley processional of peddalrs, carts, wagon's and broken down hacks. Amaryllis wiped her face and hands with a clean cloth dipped in rosewater, tidied her hair into one long, shining braid, and donned a fresh, starched apron, before exiting the inn to greet the newcomers.

Most required naught but food for themselves and provender for their livestock, the new arrivals sleeping gypsy style, in a wide variety of dilapidated caravans. Those that required other accomodation were more interested in a spot in the barn's hay mow than with the gentry, or the more affluent, within the walls of the inn.

Amaryllis directed the stable hands to bring oats, warm mash, water, and curry combs to the intinerant guests and, turning, she bustled back to the kitchen, to organize breakfast. Soon, the delicious odours of a mixed grill tantalized the nostrils as she and the scullery maid set forth platters of curried sweetmeats, pea meal bacon, plump farmer's sausages, breaded chops, buttermilk biscuits, apple pancakes, and eggs scrambled with sharp cheddar cheese and wild mushrooms.

So it was that even the most determined of sleepers began to rouse in the wagons, between the bustle of the stablehands and the promise of culinary delights. All the sleepers, that is, except those in the last peddlar's cart, where the occupants still felt the effects of the previous nights revels, the remnants of which sloshed in earthenware jugs as Little Troll made her escape . . .

“Escape...” Little Troll dictated to herself. “That is what I shall over come with this.” She paused for a moment to sniff the air. A bright smile came to her face. “But first.” A hand was held up. Small and knotty her knuckled cracked lightly before returning to their pointed position. “Breakfast.” Ahh yes, The meal of order in her day. Little Troll started across the way the grounds. Her feet taking her as fast as a shuffled run could muster towards to Don’t Drop Inn.

“Greetings.” Her arrival was announced with. Overly joyful, bouncy, and the lack of ability to stand in one spot the little woman twitched her head one way, and then the next. “Is there food?” her mouth spoke, and her stomach echo’ed the refrain with a hearty growl.

"Indeed so. " Amaryllis smiled. The little one was so joyous, she was infectious to be near and it was with a lighter step that Amaryllis led the way to a corner table, discreetly placing a footstool within reach, and cushions so that Little Troll could easily seat herself and make herself just the right height from the table's top, the better to enjoy the feast that was set before her.

"What brought this endearing creature here?" wondered Amaryllis. It was with considerable astonishment that Amaryllis observed the mixed grill and other delicious accroutements disappear like magic into the small but voracious mouth. Each economical movement of the dainty hands with knife and fork was a source of wonder as the food vanished with a polite rapidity which signalled both good manners and a sustained hunger.

"Yes", mused Amaryllis, "there is a story here", but discretion won out and Amaryllis hastened to meet the needs of her other diners, leaving Little Troll with her solitary feast.

Amaryllis was not the only one to observe the animated little diner, however, and . . .

Little Troll gave a giggle at the foot stool. A soft hiss of air came through the knocked and bloodied teeth upon her face and a shrug to her shoulders. "What brings any of us here?" The little woman countered the question with a question.

A small snatching hand absconded a sticky bun and twisted teeth bit into it before the halfling spoke again. When she is left alone the woman raised an eyebrow and shrugged. Her shoulders tossed in such away that caused her to look around with a smirk.

Once to the right. Another to the left, a small hand took another roll, and then another. It brought a smile to her face as she started to Juggle the food quickly.

Three tosses in, the little woman found herself with a sticky nose and a few giggles on her lips, but other then that, happy to get a good meal.

Amaryllis was astonished. She had only wondered to herself, not aloud, but somehow this oddly comical little woman had intuited the unspoken question in her mind.

When Amaryllis brought the bill, she also brought a smalll container of a clove-scented paste. 'Twill take the pain from your mouth, mistress" she whispered. With a quick smile, Amaryllis turned upon her heels and moved to greet new patrons, leaving Little Troll to contemplate the gift.

Editorial note to greenworld. This kind of writing is known as "God-modding" and is a distinct faux pas and frowned upon in RPGs. Not only does this NOT constitute good writing but it is disrespectful to other players/writers, who have spent time and energy developing a consistent story line and trying to inter-relate with others. We are a community here. Do try to learn to play nicely with others.

Greenworld awoke with a sudden snort in his corner of the Inn and looked around sheepishly, as the comely wench, victim of his dream, swayed winsomely past. Drat the woman! A fierce warrior, a wondrous cook, and yet she seemed utterly oblivious to both his presence and the direction of his thoughts. Greenworld growled, deep in his throat, an ugly sepulchral sound which made his companions at the neighbouring table shift away from him.

Amaryllis, gliding forward to meet the newcomers, observed the action out of the corner of her eye, making a mental note to herself to take food and wine to that corner as soon as the new guests had been seated.

Once the paste was applied to her mouth, Little Troll smiled softly. "Much better." she said to no one in particular. Well other then herself really. The words came slurred but that was to be expected with such an injury.

A glance was given about to the room before she slide from the chair to the ground and started to follow the nice woman that brought her food. Sure she had to pay for it, but really, once you feed some people they never truly leave.

"Wha cha going?" Troll asked. Not intending to be noisy, but actually rather curious as to what the woman's daily tasks where. Stopping a few tables over she looked at one of the patrons and offered an infectious smile. Then a wave. "hi!" Her chipper voice going up with infliction. "How are you?"

Unknown to the other patrons in the bar, the young wizard Lazon Blackthorn sat in the one corner that had lack of illumination, observing the actions of all who came and went. Until recently he had been quietly sipping his roseberry wine, contemplating the various ways of subduing the rare but powerful bavarian troll. However, the wine and all previous thoughts laid forgotten due to a ripple in the aura of a single patron. Recently awoken in a corner opposite his was an unknown adventurer who had a pale aura of death about him, contrasting the vivid green of life abundant in the place. This was not the death common to adventurers such as him, a death that clings to the skin like cobwebs, no, this was from within. This unknown man was troubled from within, and this type of aura was NOT common, atleast not in this realm... Lazon sat back and scanned the room, noticing a pink aura of happiness around a certain halfling. Surrounding this aura, however, was a haze of something.... different. Lazon, not being too experienced with this particular spell, couldn't identify this haze, but he knew it was different. Not good, not bad. Just... different. Lazon decided he would keep an eye on her, as he was worried. Not knowing if this was the rare aura of ill times to come, or something different, he was unusually empathetic to whatever plight might befall the halfling and vowed to intercede if anything were to happen. Noticing his wine again, Lazon picked it up and took another sip, sinking back into the soft padding of the corner booth, relaxing and letting the worries of life drift away like wisps of mist. Rough times were undoubtedly ahead, and he wanted to be rested in case he would play a part.

A grey eyed, gray haired warrior walks into the room, wearing a varied mix of steel, iron, sweat and spots of old, dried blood on his gear and garb. Nodding to the occassional glances he gets, goes to the bar, asking, " G' Night, I'll take some ale and cheese, please..."

A man wearing naught but sandals, shabby pants, and a frail wool shirt, stumbles through the door, as if he had stubbed his toe on an unseen step. Glancing around the room, he notices a grey haired warrior standing at the bar, eating some cheese, and sipping a frothy mug of ale. Nervously, he glances around again, nods to those that nod or wave to him, and slowly begins to make his way to the bar, near the big warrior.

"Pardon me sir, but you look as if you have traveled far and battled many. If it isn't too much to ask, I've come from a distant monastery seeking a challenge. If you have seen her, would you please direct me towards finding the woman known as Little Troll? I was told she is a worthy adversary."

His chin perks up, as he realizes he's been rude. "My apologies, good sir, my name is Ebon."

Udo von Krieg
11-24-2008, 08:31 AM
The mercenary turns to look at Ebon, smiles and says, "No need for apologies, I´m Udo. I do not know this woman, nor her whereabouts...what does she look like? Maybe the bartending girl will know..." and turning to one corner, he adds..."or that young wizard on the dark corner..."

Udo von Krieg
11-24-2008, 12:16 PM
Munching his cheese, Udo says: "What's the idea of looking for a challenge? There's war enough out there...and gold to be gained, if you're good at it..." pauses to belch, then goes on " where you from, if I may ask ?"

Looking up at the big warrior, Ebon states "from the new Monastery established at the edge of the lands of Kharn." "I'm seeking a challenge of the mind, body, and soul. I was told by my teacher to seek out a little troll, and challenge her." Ebon pauses for a brief moment, "the details of the challenges, I would prefer to keep to myself at this time."

Ebon looks around the room, turns back to Udo and bows, "thank you for your time, I shall ask the other patrons."

Seeming more confident and less nervous, Ebon makes his way to the dark corner where every patron seems to be hiding.

Udo turns and leans on the counter while keeping his eyes on the ragged monk...there is nothing better to do while finishing the ale, and the girls around are busy with the patrons...better wait and see. Maybe the Demon will be still this moon, hopefully

But after so many years he knows it is a useless hope. It will come out and kill again...

After having relieved himself out back, The Holiest of Holies comes in for a reload of Blood Ale (tomato juice and ale). "Well look what we have here" he says. Udo turns his head. Rasputin says, "Udo, you old pig sticker, how the hell are ya? I heard you was in these parts and hoped to run into you. That squirrelly dude you just talked to is a tall taler ain't he? Why I hear he goes around making up stories just to hear himself talk, I suspect. Tell me what you been up to."

The 'squirrelly dude' mutters, "and that is what is known as the pot calling the kettle black". Ebon turns to the bar keep, and orders some of that cheese Udo appears to be enjoying.

Rasputin the Rover
11-30-2008, 09:05 AM
"What are we mice or men?" Rasputin says. "Gimme some beeves and a tater, please. So, dude, you don't like losing weapon autions, huh? I say, better luck next time and don't be so slow about it. Them top guns are always lookin to upgrade their arsenals and sell their old stuff at a loss. The smart shopper upgrades their inventory without bumpin heads with 'em."

Udo von Krieg
11-30-2008, 10:45 AM
Udo raises his eyes from his ale, looks into Rasputin's eye, and smiles..."Good to see you again, Rasp! In my saddle I have the bandages I promised the last time we met! , he, he...." From his belt he picks a dagger, starts cleaning his nails, and remarks casually, " You know, improvement comes at steeper prices these days...what you don't get with coin, can always be settled with a good fight, eh...?, but tell me, are there some news of the lost kingdoms, or some new war where I can get a job ??"

Rasputin the Rover
11-30-2008, 12:59 PM
Rasputin loosens his belt after inhaling his dinner and belches loudly. He begins picking his teeth with a bone sliver and says, "I've a feelin' we'll be seein' more and more rascals from the outlands. It seems there is a new face around here every day or two. Those lost kingdoms keep gettin' found don't they?"

Udo von Krieg
11-30-2008, 04:19 PM
"That's a fact...Dammned merchants, they charge fortunes for the things they put on the shop...while they stock black markets with their left hand, right?...Tell you, there are some strange characters around. You've seen the monk , but over there is a wizard I've never met, a strange halfling by the other door and, as usual, the elvish bargirl that taunts the greenhorn snoring on the table...Any of them are known to you ? D'ya need another round of that bloodpiss? It's on me!.." Udo gestures for another pitcher while wating for the Holy to answer...

Little Troll. This name causes the halfling to look about as to whom seeks her. A small hand raises to the air, as if to signal that she is the one that is sought but then is thought better of. "Why." Comes her voice after a moment. If the past has taught the curious and cart-dwelling halfling anything it is the simple rule that caution should not be throw to the way side for curiosity. Ebon. The name was spoken by the man, whom said he was from a monastery and the little halfling committed it to memory. Of course the moment it was committed it was also searched for in the past. Her thought processes left her to ignore the cross name that was offered. That is until the bartender was brought into this. Udo? The name sounded familiar, or perhaps it was just what was called when she did something wrong, Udo this! Yeah that was it Udo this! "I know you! Udo This!" The halfling pipped up at least and rushed over to meet the man. Her hand jetted out and even if the mercenary didn't accept it, it pumped wildly in the air in greeting. Of course then Ebon kept speaking. And the little halfling shied away once again to the shadows. "Why..." she asks. "Who was your teacher." A finger came up to tap upon her chin, her mind working twice its normal rate in attempt to figure out who she knew in Kharn. And then a man, to Little Troll looked nothing more then a pig in robes spoke up to the man named Udo this. 'Hi..." she pauses, "You're a pig sticker...Where do you stick them to?" The little woman wondered out loud and before she could prevent herself. A glance was given back over to the monk when it was mentioned he was a squirrel. "HE doesn't have a tale though." She protested. "How can it be call if he doesn't have one." Once again the Little Troll was confused. And then there was mention of Auctions. The little troll grew even more confused. So much so she wandered to the monk, gently pulled upon his robes and asked with a voice that would make sugar seem sour. "What the hell is he talking about?" She looks over to Rasputin again. "Why would a smart shopper not wish to bump heads with top guns.." She pauses and blinks slowly again, "What is a Gun anyway." She shrugs lightly. "And why would you sell your old stuff at a loss. That doesn't seem very smart." She paused now to look at Rasputin, "Are you blimey in the head..What is a dude anyway? It sounds like something an animal leaves on the street." She shakes her head and sighs. "You know." The little woman announced, "This world really is crazier then I can be. And coming from a woman that calls her self Troll. That says a lot about this world."

Nezkrul
12-02-2008, 08:46 AM
"You!" exclaims the ill-dressed monk. I've been searching for you. Yes, I'm Ebon. My teacher is Master of the West Wind, and he has set me upon a quest to challenge you to 3 different duels. Present company aside, would you please indulge me? I believe none of the challenges I have for you will result in little injury.
Looking very excited at these turn of events, Ebon half stuffs his cheese wedge into his mouth, fumbles at his pouch, and produces a scroll for the little halfling to read. "My master bid me give this scroll to you, should you refuse the challenges, but I believe his intent was for you to see it anyway."
*(sending private message)*
As Ebon waits for little troll to read, he orders some bread and another piece of cheese.

12-02-2008, 09:58 AM
Udo, somewhat confused by the halfling's speech, accepts the handshake, and starts laughling out loud, really amused, then says, "Well, girl ...as to pigs, I'll stick'em wherever my client asks for....but yes, the world is indeed crazier than ever before. By the way, you've got my name wrong, only His Holiness Rasp calls me that way, with his strange accent...I'm Udo, like "ooDoh", got it?" Even as he speaks, he tries to look into the scroll, but the script is not familiar...

Ebon chuckles a bit, "I thought it was pronounced YouDo as well, I'm sorry."

Udo von Krieg

Udo says: "I come from the south, from Als-Krieg, which you call over here 'barbarian lands' so the language is a bit different, I'm afraid - anyway, after all these years, you can call me whatever you want - for a price, of course, I've stopped caring...when I'm employed, my only name is steel..."

Rasputin the Rover
12-04-2008, 06:35 AM
Rasputin appreciates Udo's offer of more Blood Ale and pipes in, "I reckon y'all fig'er I talk kinda funny, but where I come from we all sound like this. I'm from a place called Harbor Country in the great Republic of Michiana." He looks to the small one and says, "Gun is a term I use for a hired hand that kills with ease. You don't want to mess with Top Guns. I reckon around these parts, Udo's a pretty fair Top Gun." He looks at the little troll and says "Are you afflicted?"

Rasputin the Rover
12-04-2008, 06:45 AM
Rasputin sees the chuckle excaping Udo and says, "Udo, the economy is so crappy right now, no one wants to hire us for war'in. I don't know what I'm a gonna do. I might have to get a respectable job like healin'. It's been so long since I healed, I forgot all my spells. It would be quite an investment to relearn that skill. I sure do wish some money bags would come along and ease our sufferin'." With that outburst, Rasputin shakes his head. "My pray'in ain't up to the task anymore." Rasputin looks around for the Elvish innkeeper and can't see her anywhere. Maybe she's in the kitchen baking those biscuits he's come to admire so much.

Udo von Krieg
12-04-2008, 10:06 AM
"Hmmm..." Udo says, "that leaves us two choices...what about farming? There must be some untended land around...or if you're not into it, maybe you can get yourself an affluent widow to share some late night praying, huh?" he adds with a wink. "Just make sure about the money bags..." Then he asks the halfling, "what about you, Little one? What are you looking for in the Don't Drop inn, and in such distinguished company as us?"

Athonese de Courtenay
12-10-2008, 05:24 PM
Athonese moved with her usual efficiency, flitting 'twixt the tables, behind the bar and in and out of the kitchen, silent as a ghost and as seemingly unseen by the patrons who had their attention fixed on the mini drama involving the female troll, the handsome and elegant mercenary and the bit of offal known as Rasputin.

Athonese has met the mercenary before and it was pleasant indeed to see him again. Hardly surprising that he did not recognize her, since their last encounter was in vastly differing circumstances and she had been garbed quite differently. Still, 'twould be interesting to see if his subconscious would recognize what his conscious mind did not.

She smiled mischievously as she leaned across the table to her, hlong hair brushing against his cheek as she placed a generous portion of fragrant tortiere in front of him. Her perfume tantalized his nostrils as she replaced his empty flagon with another.

Udo von Krieg
12-10-2008, 10:21 PM
Udo's attention sharply focuses on the girl, the food...and the perfume...which reminds him of another time and place..."Excuse me, lady, have we met before? 'Cause if not, I'd swear I've met one of your Gyndwar relatives..." Udo inadvertently has used his own language, and inwardly cursing himself for the slip, continues, "sorry..., I mean, Elven relatives..."

Rasputin the Rover
12-12-2008, 03:28 PM
Rasputin eyes the Elven inn keeper and notices her outward hostility to his present blood encrusted condition. Her manner towards Udo however, is blatantly flirtatious. An embarrassed Rasputin says, "Udo, if you have met this here philly before I'd scarce believe you'd not remember. I think I'd ought go get them bandages and clean up a little if there's gonna be any entertainin'." He pays for his dinner and walks toward the door. "I'll be back with bells on."

Udo von Krieg
12-12-2008, 05:48 PM
Udo turns to look at Rasputin, and says, winking, "very well, your Holimess, I'll wait for you...", while still expecting answers from the girls (halfing and elven, in that order)

Rasputin the Rover
12-18-2008, 07:41 PM
After cleaning his personage and changing into his entertaining attire, the Holiest of Holies re-enters the inn. "If I'll be God-Damned Udo...our entertainment has foresaken us. Whatever can a man do to withstand a woman's idle wanderings. Look, I've even brought my banjo! I'll be damned if I play and sing for these wasterels. If I ain't entertain'in no darlin' de-lights, I might as well head back my the campfire."

Udo von Krieg
12-18-2008, 10:17 PM
"Maybe we can get a decent bottle of Firewine and remember old times? I'm still intrigued by our wizard friend...a silent one, it seems...By your fine appearance, I guess you've been getting a bit more refined since we last met, right ?" Udo smiles, hoping the banjo will remain silent, remembering that prayer is not the only forgotten talent of the Holy one...

Rasputin the Rover
12-27-2008, 08:48 AM
A clearly put out Rasputin says, "These inns are all the same...as soon as you start to enjoy yourself, the atmosphere peters out. I'll just sit here and tune my banjo and see if we can scare us up some company. I will agree to some of that Firewine though." He starts tuning his banjo, making sure to play loud and bad enough for all to hear. After a lengthy display of exceptionally bad dexterity and what can only be described as a tin ear, Rasputin asks the crowd " Has anyone heard of a tune called "Turkey Buzzard". Before anyone replys he begins playing a god-awful racket...

Udo von Krieg
12-27-2008, 09:02 AM
Udo, seeing that his efforts in silencing his friend are wasted, goes to the counter to get a big tankard of Firewine, which hopefully will be hard enough to knock the lights out of Rasputin, if he keeps on singing.....

Rasputin the Rover
12-28-2008, 08:37 AM
After his rousing rendition of Turkey Buzzard was over, Rasputin looks over the room and is disappointed with the lack of response. He puts the banjo back in its sack and says, "Udo, I think music is becoming a lost art. No one appreciates a musician these days". Rasputin fights to keep his laughter at himself in.

Udo von Krieg
12-28-2008, 03:55 PM
Udo, who at this moment would happily confront a dozen rabid werewolves rather that hearing a second song, fills Rasputin's cup to the brim with Firewine, put on a grave face and says, "Yes, I agree with you...uncultivated peasants, they cannot appreciate art in its purest form...I was about to dance after you finished, but I'll deny them the pleasure..." He fills his own cup, takes a big swallow, and goes on.." What are your plans for the next days? Since our company seems gone, we could start looking for some job that suits our varied talents, eh ?"

Rasputin the Rover
12-31-2008, 07:12 AM
After giving the room another contemptuous glare, Rasputin picks up his cup and says, "Udo, the days are starting to get longer and the wind will start coming from the south. I ain't no cultivator, that's for certain, but I do like to wander. I'm a fixin' to start culling the herd of the Lord's weakest creations. We got too many takers and not enough givers such as ourselves." With that he takes a gulp of wine and says "That is some mighty fine tasting sasparilla, I wonder if they sell it by the barrel."

Udo von Krieg
01-02-2009, 10:25 PM
Udo says, "ahh, yes, this is goood stuff...I used to smuggle it into the kingdom of Uraven as a kid, those were nice times, with a bottle you could get one or two decent one-hour concubines, ha!" He takes a big swig, downs it with a grimace and continues..."Y'know, Rasp, I do remember that girl, but elves live so much longer than us, that I was just making sure I'd not make a fool of myself...but anyway, I don´t know if I will live tomorrow, so, right? I learned the lesson long ago, in this trade, do not love someone you can't stand to lose...or kill, I would add..." the unwanted memory passes quickly after another gulp of Firewine "...but tell me, what are your specific plans ? I'm unenplyed at the moment, but I've made some money so I can join you, I'll charge you no fees unless there's big spoils or heavy killing, eh ? Friend to friend ?"

Rasputin the Rover
01-04-2009, 09:59 AM
After collecting his wine scattered thoughts, Rasputin says "Udo, I've a hankerin' to go a visitin' this feller who done me dirty a while back. He lives only 5 days ride from here. He's got hisself a nice spread and some perty daughters. I reckon he's got him a right sizable stash of coins by now. He won't be expectin' me back anytime soon and we could get the drop on his double crossin' mangy hide. I'd split any spoils 50/50. What say you?"

Udo von Krieg
01-04-2009, 12:27 PM

Rasputin' downs his last and says, "It'll be good to be back in the saddle, though I reckon the older I get the more I like the city life. It's easier on my bones but hard on the money belt. Let's go get some provisions and then we'll saddle up. I'll tell you where we're a goin' onced we're out of town. Too many ears around here for my likin'."

Udo smiles, gets up silently and in his regained professional status, walks out of the inn, glancing to his black horse and turning after to wait for Rasputin to lead the way

Rasputin goes out to the hitching post and tells Udo "I'll be right back, I got to change into my ridin clothes. These Sunday go to meetins are a pain to keep clean." He walks back in with his pack and comes back out in his traveling attire which the enchantress found offensive. "Ahh, now that's more comfortable. You know Udo, I've always admired that midnight ride of yourn. I tell anyone who'll listen its the fastest hoss I've ever seen. That chestnut gelding of mine will be hard pressed to match if and when we get in a scrape so don't run off to far ahead, OK?" Rasputin chuckles, shakes his head and mounts up. "Me and my Danger haven't been together long but he knows how to take good care of me." With that our two adventerers start on a most interesting journey....

Udo smiles with a mix of pride and affection for his horse, and says "Yes, a fine horse he is, my Geryddwen...the best riding gait I've seen in a long time, even at a full gallop, rides smooth and easy, but responds to the bit in the blink of an eye !..." While talking, Udo has checked his gear, straps and pouches, blankets and grain, and finding all in good order, gets to the saddle, leaving for the moment his helmet hanging on the pommel, to enjoy the fresh air until leaving town...the reins are already battle set, tied to both saddle and the chest rings in his breastplate, so as to have his arms free in battle. While riding, a short bow and quiver is ready to be used, as well as a big spear. The dagger is loose and ready to be used...In a mild voice, he asks, "Hey Rasp, do you have a plan for retirement ? Being a bard, perhaps ?..." He still is in a good mood, since the demon appears to be still for the time...

Udo's humor and good nature are much appreciated in these troubled times by his Holieness. Rasputin knows he has picked a suitable partner for the upcoming adventure and feels at ease. After trotting a couple of miles he says, "My friend, this man we are to confront is not without guile. I am certain his forces will be stout and not easily defeated. I have longed for the day to separate his head from the rest of his body. To see his earthly remains toasted to an evangelical crisp has been a wish I could not hope to attain. It was a stalwart comrade that was the last requirement to send him to his maker. Evane Groobe will rue the day he laid waste my body and soul on the ramparts of Stahlen Maar." At the utterance of the name of his master's most heinous foe, Danger whinnied and tossed his head. "I wear scars and memories to last me to the end of my days of that battle. We will not be vanquished this time, I am certain." Udo is not perplexed at Rasputin's change to the King's english as he has witnessed the transformation from outlander to noble many times. It is in Rasputin's nature to be seen as a stranger to learn information he would not normally be exposed to. Believe it or not, his gregarious village nature has saved his life on more than one occasion.

Udo's internal awareness springs up after hearing Rasputin's comments. Now the professional warrior surfaces, talking in precise terms: "To complement your wishes, we need an action plan. Brief me on these details: Quality and quantity of troops, location, terrain, acess and exit routes. A map would be handy, if you have one." Turning his head towards his friend, he adds, "As to the scars, spare me the sight, I don´t want any unholy parts of you uncovered in the sunlight, eh? People may talk, y'know..."

The serious nature of the work at hand become apparent in their discussion. "Groobe has a fortified estate with 4 50 meter spike tipped log walls. He normally has 10 men plus his family. The men have a bunkhouse on the North wall and the family on the South. The livery barn is on the West wall and the entrance is on the East. It is hilly and heavily wooded against the South wall and open meadow with some small scrub trees around. There is a meandering large creek that comes from the Southeast." Rasputin rubs his chin and says, "I don't recall any spell-casters except Groobe."

Udo von Krieg
01-11-2009, 10:08 AM
Udo takes mental notes of the place, starting to devise an attack plan..."Very well, any spells or magic wards outside the palisade? Scouts or outposts ?...and of course, please state our primary objectives, please..." While speaking, Udo is staring into the distance...

Rasputin the Rover
01-11-2009, 11:04 AM
Udo's military precision is frying Rasputin's brain. He thinks for a minute and says, "It has been some time since I spied on Groobe. I don't recall any wards or traps. Scouts are sent out regularly in pairs. They are not battle dressed, but mostly archers. As to my primary objective..I would cast Groobe's soul to the four winds, but I am certain his estate has a sizable amount of cash. He is a large landowner with a sizable herd. My eyesight is not what it once was, what is it you see ahead?"

Udo von Krieg
01-11-2009, 01:53 PM
Udo turns his head to look at Rasputin, smiles thinly and says: " Maybe I'm pushing you a bit. Let me rephrase: Do you want to preserve Groobe's land and estate? Shall the troops stay alive? Should his kin be obliterated? Slaves get a good price in the Abaloon Market in the south..." Udo's face is emotionless while he talks, suddenly he grins and says "The only thing I see ahead is...pain and blood, I'm just trying to figure how to avoid it being mine...or yours, my friend...which brings me to another point: How good are you with wepons? I'll need some backup..."

His Holiness ponders for a moment then answers,"Udo, I am not normally a blood-thirsty man, but Groobe is not worthy of another day's sunshine. His estate is vast. It would be too much like work to run it. I have a feeling once the master is slain, his troops will flee. His wife and daughters did not make this war with him and me. I would prefer to leave them to their own fates. Believe me, there will be riches aplenty somewhere inside those walls."

"My deadliest weapon is my mind, but I do have some close range deterrents. My great axe and my staff are not to be discounted. You will find I can reach out and touch my enemies at quite a range and with sizable damage."

Wow this.... THING.... really does suck!

Udo is internally relieved with his friend's answer, since after some years, you never know how people may change; a big smile on his face, he clasps Rasputin's shoulder and says: " Well, well, I am really happy to help you...the task will be lighter for us, then. My first idea is to reach a good observation point and strike when they are busy with the livestock. A diversion may be necessary to get into the palisade. Maybe a small fire, eh ?" While talking, Udo gets a strip of smoked beef from the saddlebag, cuts it in half and passes a piece to the Holy One...

Rasputin the Rover
01-15-2009, 08:31 AM
Rasputin gladly receives the jerky and takes a bite. "A fire is awaiting Groobe for certain. His maker has unhappy plans for him...A daylight attack is more likely to be successful in that their wariness will be diminished. I say an observation post on the hill below the crest with dry camp on the backside would be sufficient for our purposes. We should be able to view the entire surrounding area from there. However, we must be wary on our approach, he may have someone there already."

Udo von Krieg
01-15-2009, 10:06 AM
"Well, it's settled then...We'll get to that place on foot, you have to spot a place to camp and leave the horses. Pick a detour that has a creek or river, so we can cover out tracks when approaching..." Udo relaxes on the saddle, letting Rasputin lead the way to Groobe.

As they follow the trail, the sunhine is quite pleasant and the south wind brings the scent of the nearing woods. While enjoiying the calm, Udo is startled by a searing pain in his left hand, and when he looks at it, half of it is black with brown and dark red stripes across it, and the fingernails have turned into razor sharp claws...then as suddenly as it happened, the hand is normal again. Udo's calm is shattered, and even as he keeps an indifferent expression, his mind is racing...because the curse - the Demon - is rising once again, and blood will be spilled before it passes...

As the pleasant day turns to dusk the pair come upon a heavily wooded forest and it suddenly becomes night. Danger lets out a snort and pricks his ears. Rasputin says, "Someone is being very careless this evening, I smell smoke. I will bet you a gold piece we have an orc camp upwind. They are a lazy lot, in my experience, and take to the bottle too early and too often."

Udo von Krieg
01-16-2009, 09:55 AM
Udo sniffs the wind, and gets the smell of smoke and a faint trace of the orcs stench. His face turns into a revulsion mask, spits and says: "Urghai ! Nai gharen sterh !" After the curse and a gesture against evil, he turns to Rasputin, and says, " You're quite right, they must be camped beyond that hill, judging from the wind...Shall we pay a visit to redeem their sins?" While speaking, Udo has taken out for the pack with throwing knives and is strapping them to his right leg.

Rasputin the Rover

Rasputin pulls on his reins and stops. "I say we tether the horses off the trail and approach with stealth. We can then spy on the camp and make our plan once we see the layout, eh? I have a feeling these beasts are in need of salvation."

Udo von Krieg
01-18-2009, 01:22 AM
Udo nods and leads Geryddwen to the treeline, and dismounts silently. He whispers two words to his horse, and it quiets down. Udo takes a dagger that goes into his right boot, a short bow and quiver and tucks the rein under the saddle. Turning to Rasputin, he says, "He is Aynar trained, he'll guard the road until we return...You can start with the Urghai salvation, I'll take care of last rites..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-18-2009, 08:27 AM
Rasputin dismounts and tethers Danger lightly to a sapling. "We won't be long" he says to his horse. "I will bring my axe and staff but doubt I'll be needing them." Udo and Rasputin silently blend into the forest and come to the hill crest. Below are three Orcs sitting around a campfire with a large bird on a spit over the flames. They are, as suspected, passing around a jug and a pungent cheroot. "Looks like monkeys in a barrel to me Udo. What do you think about me as a diversion and you attack from their blind side. I have an urge to orate tonight?"

Udo von Krieg
01-18-2009, 07:19 PM
Udo says: "I'll go down and around those bushes on the left. This war party must have one or two more scouts near. I´ll wait for your actions. Give me some time. No prisoners." This said, Udo vanishes in the dark.

Udo von Krieg
01-19-2009, 02:17 PM
Udo moves, guided by moonlight, gets back to their starting point and pulling the cape hood over his head, waits for his vision to adjust. After that, he slowly goes around the hill, to position himself opposite to Rasputin. As he expected, another orc is guarding the way to the camp. Aiming with the bow, holds his breath, stills his hand and fires. The orc is instantly killed, no sound from him. Udo starts crawling upwards, coming close to the vile corpse, the smell of blood mixed with its usual pestilence. But the blood seems to obliterate his other senses...he starts sweating, vision is blurring and a headache is so intense he is passing out, while screaming like a cursed soul...in his mind.

The silence has not been broken. The forest is still.

"Kill...kill...kill...KILL!! Master commands, kill!! KIIILLLLL!"...A hideous visage is peering out of the cape, thinking in gusts of uncontrolled rage, five red eyes just looking for prey...black and brown striped hide, claws contracting convulsively...An unhuman jump puts the Demon among the miserable orcs, bluish fire forming at the claws..."FLESH !!! LIFE!!! KIIILLLLLL...."

Unhuman mind, unhuman speed...in a blink the heads of the orcs come together by the force of the demonic spell, melting into a repulsive mass of flesh and hair, becoming a living, grotesque six legged altar. The bodies are ripped open and guts and blood are piled at the center...as the bodies collapse, the blue fires consume the flesh, while the Demon roars in the night...

Then the Demon senses something at the edge of the camp...

01-19-2009, 03:23 PM
Rasputin was just entering the firelight of the camp and beginning to get his thoughts together when an altogether frightening form appeared and rendered the orc party into a blue fired mass. In his astonishment he takes 3 steps back into the darkness and watches the ferocious form howl in murderous delight. He is amazed to see the cloak of Udo and wonders if the demon has killed his friend too. Just at that moment the dark form turns its head and Rasputin is struck by the visage of five glowing red orbs under the hood of Udo's cloak. It is unhuman and unrecognizable. Rasputin braces himself for what he perceives to be the battle of his existence..

The red eyes blaze at the sight of another sacrifice. In an instant, the Demon is upon Rasputin, claws spread wide to tear and cut...when closing for the kill, it halts as if a chain had restrained it. The claws move towards rasputin, but change in the proximity of the Holy One's body...to human hands. The Demon howls ln consuming anger, then lower itself into a crouch, snarling in a icy tone..."What arst youuu, maggot...Do you servst the MASTER ???..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-20-2009, 07:39 AM
To Rasputin's profound relief this creature is unable to attack him as it did the orcs. "I serve my master Demon, but I doubt mine is the same as yours. What have you done with my good friend Udo? Tell me at once or your master can expect you in his presence forthwith." Rasputin continues to incant in his mind his Holy protection spell. "It seems my master is more powerful than your master Demon. The Lord is most high". At this moment Rasputin lifts his staff above his head and says, "Oh Lord, we have with us a most destructive demon. He has consumed my friend Udo and attacked your servant only to be thwarted by your power and protection. I will give him but one chance to submit or your will shall be done." Rasputin looks at the demon and says "Where's Udo?".

01-20-2009, 03:10 PM
"Glory to MASTER !!!! He commands, we kill...we are curst for failing...we COMST through maggot, we hate here, sacrifice to MAAASTEEER !!!"...The Demon starts to blur, and the blue mist forms now at its feet...the hideous being vanishes, and Udo drops on his knees, retching violently...still convulsing, his eyes see Rasputin in the firelight, and says: "are we done?..."

Udo staggers to get up and turns to see the remains of the orcs. The stench of blood, guts and smoke is intense...Udo's mouth opens and closes reflexively, but he is trembling now as he says..."what happened?...did you torture these vermin ??"

"Udo my friend, It has been an interesting day. Let's call in the horses and see what kind of bird we are going to eat. Then we can sit down and have a talk. I have had quite a revelation and would greatly accept your advice and counsel." Rasputin climbs the hill and whistles two long and one short blast. In a moment or two he hears Danger trotting through the forest, closely followed by Geryddwen.

After the horses had been tended and our heroes dined on a superb goose, tender and unbelievably moist, they recline on two boulders. "Udo, we have been friends since Chaltra lost her heir at Beal'shi. You know I am your friend until it is decided my flesh is of no use. Tonight I have witnessed something the brothers at Shangra Tee taught me was in the land, but I could not believe. You see, I have been to the eastern lands and there I found eight valleys. In each valley was a clerical order starting with Shangra Doe. It is in these valleys I have found your affliction my friend and know your pain and your release. Will you let me free you of your burden? The demon that dwells within you is but a pimple on my Lord's backside." Rasputin is in awe of Udo's demonic power but believes the creatures uncontrolled psychosis could render him tits up.

Udo von Krieg
01-21-2009, 10:50 PM
Udo has recovered from the seizure, but is not completely himself yet. The words of Rasputin and his sincerity are moving, but somewhat baffling..." Rasp, I know you mean the best, but I don't recall what have you seen tonight. As far as I know, some other orc must have knocked me out by surprise...when I recovered, you had already disposed of the Urghai, in a most creative way, it seems...but my affliction, I don´t get what you mean..." Udo stares a moment into the distance. "These has happened to me before...passing out...waking in strange places...terrible things happening while I was out. I have always beleived it was the effect of taking Blackweed potion in my youth, that made me into a sleepwalker...How can you help me ?"

Udo von Krieg
01-21-2009, 11:06 PM
Udo is getting more worried..."What demon that dwells in me? I know I am not the best man around, a killer, mercenary, smuggler and cynic, but your comparison is a bit over the top...even for me, eh? But...I...I...cannot explain certain things I have seen done...once my men were murdered to the last one, another time my farm was razed...I thought a demon must be after me, that the Blackweed had damnned my soul...every full moon I have sleepless dreams, and hear of strange things around..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-21-2009, 11:31 PM
"Ahh, my General. It seems you are sincerely afflicted and are unknowing. I witnessed tonight a remarkable demonic display. If you had not reappeared before my own eyes I would not have believed it. You see, I spoke with your possessor, who is a hideous sight. This demon has five fire red eyes and is unremarkable otherwise in appearance. The demon's murderous exploits were awe inspiring to behold. It dispatched our orc friends post haste and then set upon me. It was only my Lord's protection that saved me from a most heinous fate. I have seen the after effects of Blackweed, this is not of that ilk. Tell me, has your person been pierced prior to your blackouts?" Rasputin reaches into his pouch and retrieves a pipe and a sack of Michiana tobacco. He then prepares his after dinner smoke and lights it with a thin stick from the outskirts of the dinner fire.

Udo von Krieg
01-22-2009, 01:39 PM
Udo watches Rasputin prepare his pipe in silence, glancing now and then into the darkness...deep unrest is apparent in his expression, as if painfully recollecting the past in the light of his friend's words...looking into the smoke of the pipe, he starts speaking, in a low voice..."I guess that what you tell explains somewhat what I've been through these years, the unrest every full moon; sometimes nothing happens, sometimes I pass out and wake in the midst of carnage like tonight...but you are the first living being that has been by my side upon awakening...the worst was..."Udo's voice falters, stops a moment and continues, "...my family...I always blamed the Urghai...the first unit I served was an irregular company annexed to the Darkstorm regiments in Angharen...they used us as scouts and infiltrators. I took Blackweed then...they say Blackweed roots reach Hell itself, you know...we turned into beasts, nothing could stand in our path. No one is supposed to take it more than five times, but the pay was high...I took it twenty times, some of us even more...others died after their tenth dose, died like dogs, covered in their own filth...What we did was much worse, anyway...so I thought I was ill from the weed, and that demons were after me...maybe it is true, and the weed sent me to hell...and I brought something back..." Udo's eyes are filled with remorse, but tries a grin and says, " as to your question, no, I have not been pierced either above or below the waist, at least when I was sober..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-23-2009, 06:54 AM
Rasputin enjoys another puff from his pipe. "Yours is some kind of blood virus that is actuated by the tidal forces of the moon. The demon is not of this land and told me his master sends him here to kill. How they pull that off is some dark magic I don't know. If we were to come across a Tronleet plant, I believe a poultice could be made to ward off your possessor."

Udo von Krieg
01-23-2009, 01:48 PM
Udo wonders what kind of spirit a virus may be, but does not ask, instead, he starts taking out his whetstones and says to Rasputin, "I'll take first watch, I am not tired...by the way, this demon, what did he say to you? Any clues as to his origins ??" As he speaks, he is already sharpening his dagger, in slow, quiet movements.

Rasputin the Rover
01-23-2009, 02:47 PM
After tamping out his pipe and replacing it in his pouch, Rasputin tries to recall the demon's words. "If I recall correctly, the demon said it's master sends it to kill in this world...to find sacrifices for it. The demon seemed to worship or fear its boss. It said 'Glory to Master' which to me meant some reverence. I have come upon possession before and while you are in no danger physically, I worry about continued exposure to this being for your mind." Rasputin yawns and starts fixing up his bedding on the ground. "Let me think on this further and we will discuss it at another time. Thank you for taking the first watch. Wake me when you need rest. I have to be awake to meet the dawn anyway. I get my prayers in while the sun rises. I find it refreshes my constitution more powerfully." The Holy One slips off into dreamland....

Udo von Krieg

Udo replaces his dagger, cleans the kit and drinks some water. After that he adds some wood to the fire, so it will go through the night. Arming his bow, he gathers the cape around him and pulling the hood, sits ten paces away from the fire, in a shadowed place with his back to the rocks, and facing away from the light...

...

The stars have turned in the night sky, and the woods are still, the horses are silent.

Udo walks to Rasputin's side, touching his shoulder, with a whisper..."It will be dawn in three hours. Breakfast is included in your morning duties, my friend..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-24-2009, 08:31 AM
Rasputin sits up, wipes his eyes and l yawns. "That was refreshing. Your turn to rest and don't be shy. We have time. I'll do my best for breakfast." After looking after the fire, Rasputin finds a large smooth rock and facing the east, takes a seat. He slows his mind and his breath and listens. He hears a mouse in the leaves thirty feet away. He hears a beetle cleaning its wings in a bush. A doe and fawn move off in the distance, after coming to investigate the camp. The stars are so bright he can see in the distance the hill behind Groobe's estate. A pleasant early morning. The eastern sky begins to lighten. Rasputin gathers his robes and stands holding his staff high. "My Lord, your humble servant is here again, do with me what you must. I pray to you for the wisdom and courage to make right in these troubled times. I vanquish thine enemies and offer charity to thine believers. Give me the strength to do thy work this day." He climbs down off the rock and takes a light stroll through the woods. He finds a grouse nest and removes its eggs. Quietly he returns to camp. As the bacon sizzles in the pan, Udo awakens. Rasputin says, "Good morning, eggs in five minutes."

Udo von Krieg
01-24-2009, 11:31 AM
Udo gets up, pours some water on his head, and after a quick walk into the forest he is good as new...From the saddlebag, he takes a pack of hard brown bread he hand over to Rasputin, "Put it close to the fire...unless you want to lose some teeth, it will be soft in two or three minutes.
I've got a girlfriend in the army bakery, she always keeps one or two loaves for me to get when I stop by, if her husband is away, of course !" Udo winks and, whistling, he carries his gear close to the black horse.

Rasputin the Rover
01-24-2009, 06:29 PM
Rasputin puts the bread near the fire and prepares two plates of eggs and bacon. In a pot of boiling water he drops 3 tea leaves and removes the pot from the fire. "I don't remember if you have tried my newest herbal acquisition. Bertrand, from the market told me this tea has just arrived from a new eastern settlement. The natives there are convinced it will put lead in your pencil."

Udo von Krieg
01-24-2009, 09:03 PM
Udo smiles from hearing a sinful remark spoken by the Holy One, and says, "Really? Are you planning to start getting little Holies? Is there a Mrs. Rover I haven´t met?" Udo has finished with the saddle, and now is putting on his battle armor. He pauses, looks at Rasputin again and says, "Wow ! Is that one of the new Argon leggings? I used to have one, but I sold it. Too low in the waist for my taste...I'd say your fashion sense is improving !"

Rasputin the Rover
01-25-2009, 09:46 AM
"I have no little ones that I am aware of. As for Mrs. Rover, I haven't met her yet either. A few almost Mrs. Rovers but I am a wandering soul and it always ends with me leaving and her staying where ever I found her." Rasputin looks over his new leggings and says, "It is an expensive habit I have. The latest and greatest are almost always out of my reach but I was lucky to get this pair. They are more comfortable than my Kharn's. More flexible and lighter." Rasputin cleans his pot and pan and puts them in his sack. He saddles up and mounts Danger and says, "Lets get this show on the road, eh?"

Udo von Krieg
01-25-2009, 07:49 PM
Udo swings up to the saddle in the elven way, from the right, adjusts the reins and readies his weapons, bow and quiver, spear, hatchet, dagger and throwing knives. A batlle axe is readied, and a spear as well. Udo ties a white scarf on his head, and puts the war helm, with the protection runes on its rim.

His voice is cool and distant when he says: "Lead the way, Holy One. May we live to see next dawn..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-26-2009, 07:24 AM
Off they start, out of the woods and back onto the plain. "Udo, we have made good time thus far. If we put the horses into a trot, we should make Groobe's place this evening. You see that hill ahead west northwest? That is where we are going. His estate is at the base of the hill on the south west side. We should come upon the stream before dusk."

Udo von Krieg
01-26-2009, 09:52 AM
Udo says, "I agree. I feel a storm is gathering." He points to the north past the hills. Wind is coming from that direction, colder and slightly humid. then he eases the reins and sets a faster pace to his mount.

Rasputin the Rover
01-27-2009, 03:15 PM
After a short stop to water the horses and themselves at dusk in Groobe's creek, Udo and Rasputin come to a small rock outcropping surrounded by aspen trees. "I think this would be a good spot to leave our horses and scout the situation. We could go look around before full dark. Then come back here for our plan. My suggestion is we make our move at dawn."

Udo von Krieg
01-28-2009, 09:28 AM
Udo nods, and leads the way to a sheltered place covered by two trees, close to the rock. The bushes are thick around the place, and there is some cover from the rain. Udo leaves his heavy weapons and helmet with the saddle, and cuts some jerky half of which offers to Rasputin. Then he says "I´m ready. Let's move before the rain starts. Lead the way, Rasp, I´m not too familiar with this part of the woods...."

They head out and follow the creek until they come upon a pasture full of beeves. Two riders were tending this herd and did not seem to be paying much attention to anything other than the backs of their eyelids. "We will continue to the hill as planned." At that moment a bell was started ringing and a horn began blowing. The two riders sprang to life and rode off towards the estate.

The wind is getting colder, and the air is heavy with the smell of cattle. Udo says " hmmm...it seems they have bigger problems than our intentions, or else they really have to clear their bowels, don`t you think ?" He looks appreciatively to the cattle, and adds, "Our target has a fine herd, and a lot of the cows seem to be heavy and close to foal. Good pastures, there is a lot of clover...the widow will have no trouble in finding new suitors..." Udo´s grin is feral, contemplating the coming conflict...

Rasputin the Rover
01-30-2009, 08:33 PM
"I spy a tasty calf over to the north northwest. Do us a favor and down that rascal for our upcoming sustinace. I believe that sounding was their version of the dinner bell. We should be able to poach the calf and head to the the hill to observe their routine. If you like our chances to surprise tonight, I'm all for that".

Udo von Krieg
01-30-2009, 09:46 PM
"Hm. You´re asking for a long shot" The calf is almost a hundred yards away. Udo picks a broadhead arrow, fitting it to the long bow. Breath in, holds it, aims and when the calf is still, lets go. The arrow, aided by the wind, buries in the neck of the calf, cutting a vein and the animal's spine. It falls down, thashing a bit and lies stil afterwards. "By the beard of Mahacto, I wasn't too hopeful ! I´ll get it now. No jerky for us tonight, Rasp!"

Udo gets quickly to the carcass, taking it into the woods. With quick strokes, he cuts the meat of the back in a big hunk, along with the skin, rolling it and ties it wit a strip of cloth, The rest is left for the foxes and carrion birds. Getting the meat on his shoulder, he turn and takes a different route to return. But something calls his attention on the way up.

"Hey, your Holimess, something is strange about this place..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-31-2009, 10:00 AM
Rasputin is never amazed at Udo's bow skill. It is a given that what he aims at is short lived. "Other than endless suppers walking around on legs, how do you mean strange General?"

Udo von Krieg
01-31-2009, 10:46 AM
"I noticed a strange mound when I was coming over here. Actually, I tripped over a chain coming out of it. It looks like a hatch, but it is not for getting out. The chain actually cuts the outward movement. You can only open it from the outside. Rings any bell ? " Udo starts in the direction of the camp "Let's gather some wood , I'll show how to roast meat with the skin, like we do in my homeland. With the wind coming from Groobe's place, they'll not notice our cooking..."

Rasputin the Rover
01-31-2009, 10:52 AM
"I am not familiar with hatch you describe. Being this close to Groobe's, I would say it has something to do with his estate, but you never know. Your cooking technique is also not familiar, but I am all for a feast. I'll help collect some wood."

Udo von Krieg
01-31-2009, 11:44 AM
After a while they get back to camp. Udo gets two green branches and passes them like an awl, through the outer borders of the calf's skin. Resting them on the bigger rock, he builds the fire. After a while, he transfers only the embers to the soil under the meat, so that the rock also reflects the heat. "It will cook from the bottom. You have to avoid burning the skin. When the meat is hot, you just turn it around to finish it. Keeps the juices in." Udo is grinning while he cooks, remembering better days...

After an hour, the meat is ready, very juicy and crispy on the topside. Udo cuts a big hunk for Rasputin, and gets another for himself. "Use the leather as a plate, it will not break."

Rasputin the Rover
01-31-2009, 06:06 PM
"Udo, you must pass on this technique to some fortunate innkeeper. This is the best beef I've tasted. You must keep a percentage of their take though. You can't give this away for a handshake." Rasputin pulls a bottle of fermented grapes from his sack. "I think this bottle of red will go well with our young friend." He reaches to the bottom of his sack and pulls out two pewter cups and pours the wine into them. "Too your health" he toasts and drinks the elixir of man and god. "Blast, here comes the rain!"

Udo von Krieg
01-31-2009, 10:33 PM
"Here's to Uren, my father's Quartermaster. He taught me." Udo downs his wine, proud of his cooking talents. Cutting more saplings, uses the remaining leather (cleaned of the roasted meat) to shelter the fire from the rain. " It will hold for a while, but not all night...we have to choose whether to wait for the storm to pass, or do our moves under its cover. We will be almost blind, though, if the wind does not stop..."

Rasputin the Rover
02-02-2009, 11:53 AM
"Its not fit for man or beast out here at the moment. What of this hatch you found, is it large enough to enter? We could get out of the weather and find out where it leads and what is its purpose. We can climb the hill later on and be ready to observe their routines at dawn."

Udo von Krieg
02-02-2009, 06:36 PM
" Well, I think we can get inside, but we'll have to be very wary...The chain was quite thick. Whatever is inside is certainly not getting out..." Udo gathers some branches to shelter the horses, leaving the spears and battle axe properly wrapped in a piece of greased leather.

After a short walk, they stand before a wooden trapdoor, with a locked latch and two heavy chains going each to a stout tree. The only way in is to slide the trap and crawl inside. Udo slides the ironwood handle of his hatchet into the latch, and with a twist, opens it. With a little shove, the trapdoor slides, with little noise. It is dark inside, and the air coming out is stale.

Udo turns with a half smile and says, "Well, Rasp, toss a coin to see who goes first...for all we know, it may be our doom. So don't cheat, eh? I pick tails "

Rasputin the Rover
02-03-2009, 07:01 AM
Rasputin tosses his coin, catches it and slaps it on top of his left hand. "Heads...son of a ...I guess its my turn then." He enters the hatch with his staff before him with both hands on its worn shaft. It is utterly black inside. "I can't see my hand in front of my face in here." Rasputin reaches into his sack and pulls out a crystal, puts it in a groove on the top of his staff. With his hand over the crystal says, "Luminairous minutous fell veyum". The end of the staff begins to lighten gradually and reveals....

Udo von Krieg
02-03-2009, 09:44 AM
Outside, Udo puts the hatchet through his belt, and takes his dagger and puts it between his teeth. By the faint light coming out of Rasputin's staff, he knows that there is enough space to jump. So he gets ready, gripping the sides of the trapdoor...

Rasputin the Rover

..a five foot diameter brickwork tunnel sloping downward. It is dry and the footing is sure but Rasputin must crouch to make headway. He slowly advances down the tunnel and sees a sharp bend ahead some 20 feet. He shades his staff and moves to the curve. He begins to hear voices, it sounds as if someone is being instructed. "Your father will cede his land to me princess or your life will be forfeit." A female voice says in defiance "You will rue the day you crossed Peel Tungel, Groobe! He will never submit to a bastard the likes of you!" Groobe raises his voice in anger "Ahh, but he must. He will never find you here and I know a father's love for his daughter. Now eat your dinner, you never know if you are going to have another." A door creeks open and slams shut. A lock is clasped. Footfalls into the distance...sobbing can be heard.

Udo von Krieg
02-03-2009, 04:49 PM
Udo has gone trough the trapdoor, taking care not to let it fully close, by means of one of his throwing knives. He quickly follows after Rasputin, but the conversation means little to him. Anyway, the mundane nature of the tunnel is a welcome relief after too much of the supernatural in such a short time.

When the door closes, he touches the Holy One on the shoulder, and whispers, "I'm also starting to dislike this Groobe character...who the hell is Peel Tungel ? Do you know him ? "

Rasputin the Rover
02-03-2009, 06:08 PM
"I have met a Tungel in Far Quianas, but I don't remember a Peel. Let's go see what this maiden has to say about our quarry. There could be more in it for us, you think?" Rasputin leads off and shortly enters a small room with a bench and table. A lantern is burning by a heavy oaken door with no handle. Sitting on the bench is a flaxen haired woman of 20 or some years, bent over a bowl of gruel, sobbing. She has a wall mounted chain around her ankle. Rasputin grins and says "Why young lady, I believe we have just made your day!"

Udo von Krieg
02-03-2009, 08:55 PM
Udo silently crosses to the door, attentive to any noises from the corridor. He gestures with his hands to encourage Rasputin to continue his conversation with the flaxen haired maiden...

Rasputin the Rover
02-04-2009, 07:48 AM
"How so, ugly man?" she spits. Rasputin removes his death mask. "I'm sorry, sometimes I forget to take this off in front of citizens. I am also an enemy of Groobe. My friend here is Udo von Krieg and I am Rasputin the Rover. An enemy of my enemy is my friend. When will Groobe return?" She smiles and says, "You startled me and your countenance was most hideous. I am relieved you are not the angel of death. Please unbind me, Groobe will be back with fresh water in an hour. He comes by himself mostly, but sometimes he has his entourage of magic pets. They like to ogle."

Rasputin the Rover
02-04-2009, 08:03 AM
"Very well fair lady, my friend Udo and I will have a surprise when he returns. What is your name? I heard Groobe say something of Tungel?" She begins to rub her ankle after Udo removes the chain and begins her tale..

"My name is Catella Tungel. I am the oldest daughter of Peel Tungel. Groobe is holding me hostage in order to get my father to cede valuable grazing lands to him. My father will not as he needs the lands for his own stock. He will pay you any sum to return me buy he will not enrich Groobe as their are blood enemies. Groobe thinks because he has powerful magic he can rule over us. We are a free people and would rid ourselves of the greedy, coniving murderer if we could. We have no one to stand against him."

Udo von Krieg
02-04-2009, 11:43 AM
Udo moves towards Rasputin saying, "We have forty minutes yet. Any plan ?" He looks at the maiden, smiles in a reassuring way and approaching the Holy One, whispers " Not my type, too maidenish for my taste" ...and leaning back, with the best serious expression he can muster, "Can you ward off the magic creatures, o Paladin of Holiness ??"

Rasputin the Rover
02-04-2009, 11:24 PM
Rasputin stands next to the door listening for any sounds and says "Udo, there is not an undead creature roaming the land that I have not met and mastered. It is Groobe we must plan for. His dark magic is powerful against my holy magic. My plan is we have Catella stay at her bench and you stay behind the door. I must have only 2 seconds to summon my holy strike to stun Groobe. All I need you to do is call to him to distract his attention. Do not attempt to touch him as his poison will afflict you. Catella, as soon as the door opens and Groobe enters you run for your life through that tunnel. Is it agreed?"

Udo von Krieg
02-05-2009, 10:05 PM
"Hm. That's easy, but risky. What about a thrown dagger? Will he get me that way? By the way, Catella, give me that gruel, please..." When the maiden hands it, he spills it on the entrance, where Groobe is likely to step..."He is going to like this little rug, eh ?..."

Rasputin the Rover
02-06-2009, 07:18 AM
Rasputin scratches his beard, "Yes, I like how you think General. Your thrown dagger will require his defending himself while I knock him silly. Then while he is unconscious we chain him up and give him some of his own medicine. He will not leave this room alive. Tell us, Catella, do you know where the scumbag keeps his treasure?"

Udo von Krieg
02-06-2009, 10:44 AM
" Well, it's all clear now. I´ll be behind the door, Catella must be out of my line of movement. He will enter, and if he does not slip, upon turning he will have to dodge my dagger. Stay behind me until I throw, that way he will not see you readying the spell, and he will lose the initiative. You´ll get more than your two seconds, I hope..."

Rasputin the Rover
02-07-2009, 11:30 AM
Rasputin nods his head to Udo, "Very well, its decided." He then looks to Catella and she says, "I think he has a storeroom just down the corridor on the left. I don't know it his treasure is there but I did see two oafs sitting on stools playing cards in front of a large chest." Rasputin looks to Udo, "It looks like we may not have to attack the battlements to secure our booty, eh?" As he begins to smile Rasputin can hear keys being rattled and steps coming down the hall. He looks at Udo and Catella, nods his head and begins summoning...

Udo von Krieg
02-07-2009, 12:07 PM
Udo, looking sharply at Catella, puts a finger to his lips, and gestures to make her move away from the door. The maiden moves, and he takes two daggers, one in each hand, and positions himself at the door. Rasputin is behind him, working on his spell... The lock is being turned... Udo raises his right arm and tenses for the coming conflict...

Rasputin the Rover
02-07-2009, 12:23 PM
The door swings open with a long creak. Catella looks to the door and says, "You will die for what you are doing to me Groobe!" His anger peaked, Groobe lunges at her with a raised hand, never noticing the gruel on the floor or his other guests. With a surprised curse of "What the.." he begins to lose his balance, spilling the water jug. The Holy One reaches for the sky with an open hand, eyes and mind to the heavens....

Udo von Krieg
02-07-2009, 12:51 PM
Udo throws like lightning, the dagger flies true and sinks into Groobe's left biceps, to the hilt. Without stopping, he shoves the door shut and covering his flank with his left hand and dagger, he holds the door, allowing Rasputin a clear view of his target...Groobe is unbalanced and spinning to his left in reaction to his pain...

Rasputin the Rover
02-07-2009, 01:49 PM
Groobe now sees his attackers and he knows its too late. He widens his eyes, puckers his rectum and says, "OHHH Shhiii...". Rasputin eyes his foe, brings his right hand down quickly while clenching his fist. There is a sound in the room like a loud crack while his Holiness punches the air in Groobes direction. The result of the Holy Strike is Groobes' unconsciousness as he slams into the wall head first and crumples to the ground. Upon inspection, the dirty bastard has a dent in his forehead the size of an apple. A large apple. "Oops, I guess I was a little too excited. It happens."

Udo von Krieg
02-07-2009, 03:16 PM
Udo turns the dirty table and uses it to barricade the door. "It will hold for a little ", he says, while getting to Groobe's side. Lowering himself, he looks at the dagger. "He won't be using that arm for some time, at least in useful ways. What now, Rasp? Shall he get a second smile below the first ? Can I get my knife back? "

Rasputin the Rover
02-07-2009, 04:51 PM
"Well, we buggered his brains and his arm looks like it won't be casting any Dark Magic again. Let's finish him here and now. You can be my guest General and do the honors. Catella, why don't you go and wait for us at the tunnel entrance while Udo and I take a look at the situation regarding Groobe's coin cache". She grins and says, "Not on your life old timer, I'm do some compensation for my trouble also. I'm sure you can think of some use for me to our mutual benefit."

Udo von Krieg
02-07-2009, 10:11 PM
Udo takes the hatchet off his belt. Catella's attitude and remark hasn't gone unnoticed, but he keeps his counsel, seeing that there is more to the flaxen haired maiden that appears to the eye.

Anyway, the task at hand is to be done...no time to waste. The dagger is taken out, cleaned on Groobe's robe. Gripping the hair, a swift cut cleaves the spine, sinew and veins...blood stains the ceiling...a second cut splits the corpse...the headless body falls, the dripping head is in the barbarian's hand.

The head is placed on a stool, facing the door, staring into nothing but the cell's filth.

"Done. This will confuse whoever comes here..." Udo's voice is ice cold, his expression unreadable and ageless as he cleans the blood from the hatchet and moves toward the tunnel... "Go ahead, your Holimess. Catella, go after Rasputin, I'll cover our retreat..."

Udo's peripheral vision is set on the girl, not missing the slightest move. The throwing dagger he slides blade first, into his left sleeve. Even Rasputin, as close as they are, does not know he can throw with either hand with the same accuracy...

Rasputin the Rover
02-08-2009, 08:47 AM
Out the door and through the corridor they go. All is quiet until a loud laugh is heard coming from a nearby door. Dim light is emitting from the crack of the door being ajar. Rasputin peers into the crack and sees two dwarves standing next to a table with a large shallow wooden crate on top. The dwarves have daggers out and are taking turns trying to stab whatever is inside. They look to be quite drunk and unbalanced. On the other side of the room is a chest with a padlock on it. Rasputin turns to Udo and whispers, "Come and take a look at this nonsense."

Udo von Krieg
02-08-2009, 01:31 PM
Udo steps carefully to look at the scene. "Looks easy" he whispers, "remember covering your privates when fighting dwarves, they are always closer than what you expect. Do not raise your weapons or they'll have the advantage. Sweep your axe at waist level and you'll be fine..."

He looks at Catella, smiles and nudging Rasputin he whispers, "I think the peasant girl is about to be useful as a decoy..." Gesturing to her to get near, he says, "Stay still and silent. We need you." That said, Udo quickly cuts Catella's skirt on the side up to the waist, revealing a well shaped leg. A second cut widens the cleavage of the bodice to the limits of decency. He looks up and down, satisfied, while Rasputin observes with a puzzled expression..."Now go in and play your charms, maiden...keep the door open, we will be right behind you..."

To Rasputin he says, "five seconds after she goes, we go in. Take the left one." Udo gets the hatchet on his left hand and his long knife on the right, moving to the right side of the door...

Rasputin the Rover
02-09-2009, 03:00 PM
Rasputin grins and nods. He takes his axe and crouches a little and follows Udo into the room. "Eyes on me little man!" the Holiest says to the wee lad on the left as he performs a short swing . The shocked dwarf takes an axe blade over the nose and his head splits in two. "I just made myself a new saucer, General". Rasputin then takes his axe to the padlock on the chest.

Rasputin the Rover
02-09-2009, 03:12 PM
Catella runs to a corner of the room and ejects the contents of her stomach. "Sorry, the sight of brains makes my stomach turn." She looks into the box on the table and finds a small lizard scurrying around in excitement. She reaches in and grabs the beasty and begins petting it. "NO!" says Rasputin, "that is a poisonous baby hila. It may not take kindly to your affections and bite you."

Udo von Krieg
02-09-2009, 03:54 PM
Udo, while Rasputin has gone smoothly on his kill, is having trouble with the dwarf...the small rascal has managed to avoid Udo's lunge and clings to his left leg. Udo stomps and curses, as if a cockroach was getting up his leg.

Then he throws himself to the wall, left side first, crushing the dwarf with his weight. The little pest is stunned, and lets go. Udo, rebounding from the wall, spins on the right leg and kicks hard. The dwarf, jaw broken, falls heavily. A quick thrust of the knife ends the fight.

"I'm getting old for this crap, and I should not advise on what I cannot do, eh ?" He grins until he notices the lizard. He is too far to reach Catella, so it's all up to Rasputin to save the girl...

Catella's left leg is uncovered and he notices a peculiar tatoo on the woman's calf, close to the knee joint... Three dots joined by straight lines forming an inverted triangle, and on the lower point, a black teardrop...Udo tries to remember where he has seen it....

Rasputin the Rover
02-10-2009, 07:15 AM
Catella laughs and says "Men, what silly creatures you are. I know this is a hila. I have 2 at home and they only bite when provoked. So don't provoke and you will be fine. Here pet him." She reaches the lizard out to Rasputin who raises his hand..the lizard hisses and snaps. "Ha, Ha, Ha" she laughs, "you are just naturally repulsive." Rasputin laughs and turns to Udo, "Nice job, thanks for the tip. Let us look in the chest, shall we?" They all move to the chest and Rasp unlatches the broken padlock and hasp. He opens the lid and inside are 12 small sacks and 2 fine robes and a splendid bow. "Well isn't this nice" Rasputin appraises.

Udo von Krieg
02-10-2009, 09:02 AM
Udo nods to Rasputin and reaches for the bow. When he touches it, a tingling sensation goes up his arm, the enhancement spells doing their work. The armory rune is unknown to Udo. Looking closely, thin layers of different woods have been set together. Drawing halfway, it does not twist when released.

"A fine bow...the work of a master bowsmith. Do you know this rune?" He shows the signature to Rasputin. "What's in the sacks, Holy One?"

Rasputin the Rover
02-10-2009, 07:59 PM
"Ahh, you are most fortunate, General. This rune is for accuracy and it looks to be Elven. I would estimate this bow's accuracy would be at least double any you now possess. Your range with this weapon would be at least 2000 yards. Your opponent would not even smell you, how's that?" Rasputin looks at his robe and is happy for his fortune, but nevertheless disappointed. "I have happened upon a fine armor chest but not the finest I had hoped for. Catella seems to have fit most conservitivley in her new raiment. What is up with that branding on your leg your hotness?"

Rasputin the Rover
02-10-2009, 08:14 PM
Catella slips on her robe and immediately admires its attributes. "I have aquired a supple yet elastic mage armor. I am most blessed. Your inquiry into the origination of my body art is not appreciated, Holy One. The answer to that question may best be revealed in time. I have spent my life concealing its meaning and you two do not seem to be long lived allies worthy of it's conception and knowledge."

Udo von Krieg
02-10-2009, 10:58 PM
Udo smiles charmingly to Catella, but his eyes are suddenly cold and piercing. Casually he checks his belt with the left hand, adjusting the buckle while allowing the throwing dagger's hilt to come into his palm. Then he looks at Rasputin, back to the wench and says, "Really? Let's talk then and introduce ourselves...please illustrate our poor souls about our worth and life, if you'd be so kind, Lady..."

Udo's left hand is ready for an underhand throw. The robe does not cover the woman's throat, a good stationary target at this moment....

Rasputin the Rover
02-12-2009, 06:47 AM
Catella sees Udo's hand move to the dagger and looks him in the eye and says "If you wish to know my lineage, I am daughter to Peel Tungel. He is the largest landowner in this region and was voted Ruler of Pathia. His term is for 5 years and comes up for vote again in 3 years. He has been re-elected 4 times, and is the greatest ruler in our history. The man you killed was using me to get to my father."

Udo von Krieg
02-12-2009, 09:06 AM
Udo bows gracefully and sustains the girl's gaze...there is something unnerving in her eyes, specially the left one...but passes. "As Rasputin has said, I'm Udo von Krieg, heir to the House of Valsdrahil, Master of Dragons, former General of the 7th Darkstorm Legions, ex-smuggler, ex-slaver - always Soldier of Fortune and killer.

Regarding your words, that's too little, my dear maiden. Neither word or gesture from you has expressed gratitude or relief for the death of Groobe, given your lineage or concern for your father. And it does not explain why you carry the mark of an Acolyte of the Arteaga Beytia, also called the Black Tears Coven..."

Rasputin the Rover
02-12-2009, 09:48 AM
Rasputin nods to Udo and starts to shake his head in a manner of consternation. "Just our luck to save a witch from a probable just end Udo. If its one thing I abhore its nature loving, tree huggers who deny His authority. Heathens, I say!" Catella is now turning red with anger. She puts the hila back in the box and turns back to Udo and Rasputin. "You may think you know me, but you are wrong! I will not thank you for releasing me for it was your duty to do so. Groobe was short for this world, either by your hand or someone else's. My mother marked me at birth and taught me the ways of her religion. It is all I have known since I can remember."

Rasputin takes the coin bags out of the chest and distributes 6 to Udo and keeps the rest. "She may not be thankful for her release, but she will not profit from it either. Maybe we will hold her ransom from her pagan father."

Udo von Krieg
02-13-2009, 09:03 AM
Udo still stares at the girl...He knows there is more than what she discloses, but it is not the time and place to get more information...for now. Taking the bags, he nods gratefullu to Raspuin, and says, "Well, Holy One, I am not one to pass judgement on religions, I´ve killed belevers of almost every god in Aganon...But the Coven Masters were the ones who, in the name of the king Morwan, many years ago came to our camp to show us the use of the Black Weed. She may know about my...particular problem; maybe it is time we meet the Tungel family, what do you think ?

So far, your foe is gone, and we have gold and spoils in our hands. His troops and magic servants will come sooner or later, and..." looking at Catella, and back to Rasputin, whispers, "...they may find a new Master among us..."

Rasputin the Rover
02-13-2009, 10:11 PM
Rasputin shares Udo's suspicion of the girl but knows answers come with time. "I reckon you have valid points regarding all our current concerns my friend. Catella, its time we rousted and took you home. I hope you and yours are generous hosts because I could use a warm, comfortable night's sleep after a feast fit for nobility. Your father and mother have no idea as to the company you have encountered this day. For our deeds on your behalf we will require much." Catella smiles at the foolish man and says "You and the General will be honored guests at my father's banquet table and there will be much merriment upon my safe return. You boys follow me and don't dally, we can be at my father's gate within the hour if we have mounts."

Udo von Krieg
02-13-2009, 10:55 PM
Udo raises his eyebrows when addressed by his past rank, but says nothing. He just raises his head and stares towards Rasputin, knowing from their long friendship that the Holy One is misleading the witch maiden, if maiden she may be. He puts the elven bow in bandolier, pulls his long knife and hatchet, nods to Rasputin and says, "I will not hinder you, woman, lead us. No tricks, or you will find that my dagger is faster than your feet..."

Rasputin the Rover
02-14-2009, 04:39 PM
Our heroes follow the flaxen haired beauty down the corridor, through the cell, and lastly, come to the ventilation shaft and out to the hatch. Rasputin grabs Catella by the arm, "Excuse me, my lady, let me venture out into the unknowing before you. We would not want the rescued maiden ambushed upon being freed and have to do this over again." He smiles at Udo and says "Watch this trouble-maker until I check our escape and whistle for the horses will you my friend?"

Udo von Krieg
02-14-2009, 07:47 PM
Udo lets a sharp whistle, followed by two short ones. After a while, Geryddwen and Danger come from the shadows, with the remainder of their gear and weapons.

Meanwhile, Udo says to the girl, " Now it is time for you to make a choice. You will ride with me. My horse is trained. Even if you play any trick with me, he will track you and kill you. You can choose whether to let me tie your hands now or ride unbound after I search you for hidden weapons..." With a twisted smile he adds, "as I've told you I've been a slaver...I am a very thorough searcher. Make your choice."

Catella's cheeks are so red you could kindle a fire with them, but seeing the coldness in Udo's stare, she puts forward her arms, wrists together. "Hm. Wise choice." With a leather thong Udo binds her hands. "That's better, fair maiden, up you go! " With a wide sweep, Catella is seated on the black horse. Udo gathers the border of her skirt and places it on Geryddwen's muzzle. Grabbing the rein he commands softly, " Ayal ". The horse looks at the girl and remains still. Udo jumps to the saddle and riding to Rasputin's side, says. " Well, let's move, shall we ?"

Rasputin pats his horse on the neck and gives him a carrot from his sack. He gathers the reins and mounts. "My mouth is beginning to water just thinking of some professionally made cuisine for a change. Catella, you best behave yourself on our short ride or our friend will have no qualms riding off to the nearest port and shipping you off to some far shore for a tidy profit, I'm certain." The riders take off north and after passing the Groobe estate make a westward turn down a well worn cart path passing peasants on foot who look upon them in wonderment and awe. It is not clear if they are in awe of the two strangers or the daughter of their ruler riding behind Udo submissively. Shortly the riders enter a heavily forested area and come upon a stone fortification with a well guarded entrance whose battle doors are open. Catella hails the watchman who immediately waves the riders through. Upon entering the grounds a very large and ancient castle is visable through the large red oak trees in the sizable courtyard. Rasputin looks at the many standards flying from the castle battlements and recognizes the black dragon on a blue and white checkerboard field. He looks at Udo and says "These are the same banners I saw in Far Quainas. I hope this Peel is as hospitable as his kin. As I recall, they have a family recipe for a beverage they call "Lager" that is most refreshing."

Udo gets down and helping Catella down, he undoes the restraint easily. The girl's wrists are not marked or swollen. Udo winks at her and says, before she turns with a indignant whirl, "Trick of the trade, girl..." Then he joins Rasputin, close to his shoulder, facing in the opposite direction. This way the whole courtyard is under their gaze. placing his hands on his hips, he says to Rasputin, "Your Holimess, for all we know, they may be coming for our sorry hides in no time. I really hope they will welcome us..."

Catella waves to two squires lingering outside the stable and says "You there, come and take these horses and water and feed them. Give them both a good soaping and brush down. They are tired and obviously have been ill treated in their travels." Rasputin turns and gives Catella a murderous stare. "My dear, you may call us all manner of degrading names but do not besmirch us on our care of our animals. Why Udo and myself care for those animals as if our lives depended on it, because often they do." She smiles at them and says "You two are impossible. You can never tell when I am ribbing you. Have you no sense of humor. Come lets go and inform my father of today's events. He will be most pleased with the news of our foul neighbor's demise. You two really did save my father a great deal of trouble." As they walked to the great steps of the castle the Holy One could smell the roasting of beef and his mouth started to water. "When are we dining, young hostess?"

Udo, feeling better now that trouble seems unlikely, walks silently besides Rasputin, taking mental notes of the placement and number of guards and doors. Smelling the food, his stomach grumbles loudly, in perfect synch with the Holy One's words.

The young lady shakes her head "Men, all you think of is eating, fighting, sleeping and women, and not in that order. We will feast as soon as we speak with my father, follow me please." The men fall in behind Catella and are impressed upon entering the Grand Hall. There are displays of suits of armor down each side of the walkway with different banners hung behind each one. "What do the banners designate?" Rasputin asks. "The banners and armor on the left represent defeated Realms and on the right are our allies. They became allied through inter-marriage or reciprocal aide in time of difficulty" she replies smiling. "Our alliance is a force for good the citizens take great pride in" she adds. "Well I am rightly impressed. I would have never guessed you came from such distinguished society." Rasputin can come up with a zinger to match her own she noticees with admiration. "Here is my father now" she crys and runs to him, arms stretched wide. "Oh Father, I am so happy to be home!"

Udo, looking at the different banners, recalls that he has fought for almost every one present in both rows, sa fact not to make public at this moment. Catella's behaviour, playing the pampered girl, is to be expected. So for now, he just lets Rasputin handle the situation...At Catella's words, he raises his eyes to meet the famed Peel Tungel...

The girl wraps her arms around her father and gives him a kiss on the cheek. "Did you miss me?" she says teasingly. Her father is dressed in finery. Fur lined cow- hide robe, riding boots of calfskin, gauntlets studded in engraved forged alloy that Rasputin has never before seen. Around his neck is a magnificent amulet with a garnet faceted stone seeming to emit its own effervescence. He also has a multi-jeweled belt that is buckled by a large golden disc inlaid with a coral and onyx bullseye. "Catella, I was just now planning a full frontal attack to rescue you from that murderous coward. I see that you have made your own allies and my plans have been for naught. Please introduce me to these valiant men who have returned you to me in pristine health and filthy countenance. You really could do with a bath my dear." "Oh father, you are really too dispicable" she cries, and hugs him again. "These two are quite exceptional fighters and charming rogues to boot. On out left is General Udo von Krieg. He admits to a mercenary disposition, but I gather he is of some nobility. Our other guest is a Holy man of a not so Holy order. He is named Rasputin and had a personal vendetta against my captor, the vile Evane Groobe. They entered my underground cell from a ventilation tunnel and ambushed Groobe when he brought me my water. We then ransacked Groobe's treasure and made off with a pitiful amount of lucre. Oh father, we are most famished, can we adjourn to the banquet hall and discuss our adventure while dine." Peel breaks into a wide grin and says "Of course, my child. Where are my manners. Gentlemen, please follow us to the hall. There is a lavatory there you can use to freshen up while dinner is prepared. I will assemble my court and knights so that we may be regaled by you tales and deeds of daring do." He winks and smiles and Udo and Rasputin and waves them to follow him. At the first set of doors, His Highness is escorted by four lancers who bow in homage to the esteemed guests but leave no doubt as to their purpose as the personal guard detail to the ruler of this castle.

Udo's concerns are mostly on the present, intrigued by the revelations about his posession. Looking at the honor guard, he smiles inwardly but keeps his face blank. His past experience shows that nobles welcome most barbarians when facing the wrong end of a spear, but at the moment, the need to relieve himself and wash off the blood and sweat on him is most welcome.

As he passes the guards, some black and brown stripes appear on his left hand for a brief instant...

Rasputin and Udo follow the father and daughter down the hall and turn left to an adjacent short hall. There is a door on the right which Peel motions to and our adventurers enter. It is a large wash room with 4 commodes and 4 washbasins. "Well I'll be!" Rasputin says to Udo, "Where I come from this would be called a 4 holer. I've personally been in a 2 holer but this takes the cake." After cleaning up and doing their best to improve their appearance, Udo and his Holy friend exit the lavatory and are immediately ushered by 2 more lancers to the entrance of the banquet hall. Upon their appearance in the doorway, Peel Tungel raises his ruby encrusted silver goblet and announces, "Dear Parlimentarians and Defenders of Freedom, please welcome my daughter Catella's brave rescuers Udo von Krieg and his Holiness, Rasputin the Rover." The assembled guest burst forth in clapping and hurrahs. The honored guests look around the hall in astonishment. There are no less than 75 ladies and gentlemen seated at a long, ornate table laid out with linen, chandaliers, pewter goblets, silver cutlery, high backed, quilted chairs and platters of steaming beef steaks, bowls of all manner of salads and cakes only heaven itself could compete with. And every eye is on them. Peel stands up and motions to the closest chairs to his, after his wife and 3 daughters. "Come gentlemen, please take these seats as my honored guests for this dinner."

Udo is a bit stunned by Tungel's reception; it's quite a while since he has been inside a hall such as this. By every measure, the Noble Tungel has been splendid to both himself and Rasputin. Recalling the past, Udo squares his posture and walks with a more formal step to his seat, at Rasputin's left. He has decided that it's better to remain observant and let the Holy One take care of diplomacy. Before sitting he turns in Tungel's direction and bows formally, saying. " Noble Tungel, your kindness as Host is only surpassed by the magnificence of your hall...and the beauty of the ladies present, if I may be so bold. I am grateful for all your kind attentions, and wish the best for your Realm and House." When taking his seat, he quietly whispers to Rasputin, "After this, they will not notice I don't know how to use all these forks and spoons..."

Rasputin keeps his laughter under his breath at Udo's remark. He winks at Udo and Catella and says to Ruler Tungel "may I give an invocation for our meal?" Peel says "It would be an honor." His Holiness clears his throat and takes his spoon and tinkles his goblet to get the tables attention. "If you please, where I come from we have a short prayer before our meal and kind Peel is allowing me to share it with you. Udo wonders if maybe Rasputin is the one actually possesed, but keeps a charming smile on his face. Anyway, the Holy One's remark may just spoil the meal if someone present takes offense...As he scans the faces at the table, he notices a richly dressed man, flanked by a well figured woman, seated to the right of Tungel, about four places away. The face is familiar...the man looks at Udo, and in a flash, he recognizes the Master of the Black Tears Coven, who he knows only by the name of Turgal...but the man does not seem to recognize him. Udo's body tenses, trying to figure out what's going on in this Hall...

After filling his plate three times, Rasputin smiles at the host and says "That was some fine grilled beefsteak. The wine is excellent and your hospitality to my friend and I is greatly appreciated." "Well thank you Rasputin" Peel replies, "but my hospitality has another motive besides my thanks for bringing Catella home safe." "And what would that be?" grins the Holy man. "One of our allied realms has not communicated with us in the last two weeks. My parlimentarians and I fear trouble. We are assembling a squad to scout and report back. Would you and Udo consider joining up? It would require but 4 days of your time. We are in a position to pay handsomely. The mission begins at dawn."

Maybe we should adjourn to more private quarters to discuss your proposal. Just you, ourselves and your advisors? "

The harpist begins the after dinner entertainment with a sad lamentable song. Rasputin waves to one of the lancers standing closest to him. When the lancer approaches he says to his Holiness "Yes sir, may I be of assistance?" "Well yes you can young man. Please see to the stable and my horse. There should be a sack there with a peculiar looking stringed instrument inside. Please bring it to me." "At once sir!" the lancer responds. Soon he is back and hands Rasputin his banjo. "Thank you young man" Rasp says. He looks to the dais where the harpist is murdering "Farewell and Ado". He turns to the noble host and his daughter, "I am certain that is the finest harp player in the land, may I indulge you with this new instrument called the banjo, invented by my cousin Joe Bandycka?" "Why it would be our pleasure Rasputin. We were not informed of your music making ability."

Udo von Krieg
02-21-2009, 11:50 AM
Udo silently rolls his eyes up, muttering to himself, "- your inexistent music making abilities -" . Rasputin must be, sooner or later, confronted with the basic facts about his musical talent...or lack of it.

During this time, the man Turgal has apparently been entertaining himself and the ladies, but at this point he handles a slip of paper to a serving boy, who brings it to Udo. Opening the leaf, it is blank. Raising his eyes, he notices that Turgal is watching him intently. Udo looks at him, and the man makes a gesture to a candlestick. Udo gets the slip close to a candle, and the heat brings the message into existence. Under the mark of the Coven, there is a single word, written in the high runes of Udo's homeland: "Caution". Upon reading it, all the paper turns dark, making it unreadable.

Udo is tempted to get his dagger through Turgal's eye first and ask questions later. However, the proof of the man's intent is gone. So he just nods, and bides his time. He will wait until a meeting about Tungel's request is held.

The party-goers are in high spirits and applauding the finish of the horrible harpists musical performance. Rasputin takes the stage and begins his introduction "Ladies and Gentlemen, may I first say that my friend Udo and I can not remember the last time we have enjoyed such fine company and incredible feasting. I would like to thank your sagacious ruler and all his fine guests with a tune familiar in my homeland and performed in such gatherings. So without further ado, may I present 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'". The Holy one then begins plucking his intrument and singing. The gathered guests start looking at each other in startled repugnance. After 30 seconds of his performance, Rasputin is interrupted by his host, Peel, who calls out "Thank you for attending this festive occasion one and all. You are now thankfully dismissed". Chairs begin dragging on the floor as everyone gets up from the feasting table and begin heading for the exit. Raputin says "No thanks or applause is necesary, just throw money!" The crowd laughs in disbelief at the stranger. "You must be mad!" someone from the crowd exclaims. His Holiness smiles and waves at the departing multitude. Peel comes to the stage and says to Rasputin "Put that thing down and follow me to my office and we will dicuss your renumeration regarding tomorrows departure". "Your wish is my command, let me put my instrument back in my sack for safe keeping". "Don't worry" Peel says, "I'm sure no one will molest that thing". Rasputin sheepishly grins at Udo and says "Let's go see how much we can squeeze out of these guys for a joy ride into the hinterland."

Udo is very much relieved by the silence in the room, and glad that Rasputin's interpretation did not end as deserved, that is, with the bard knocked out on the floor. He grins at Rasputin's comment, while checking who is heading in their direction.

As he hoped, Turgal is going with Peel, and also two men and a woman, one of the men is bearing arms, so he should be a commanding officer in the guard. The other two seem, judging form their garb, to be affluent and powerful persons, probably civil advisors to Tungel. Turgal does not make any gesture of recognition as he passes by.

After a short walk, they are ushered into an ample study, with a big fireplace on one side. A big table with twenty seats is in the center, with some maps on it. A low cabinet has beverages and cold roasted meats along with fruit.

Tungel immediately takes charge, saying, "Help yourselves, gentlemen. Drink and food is at your disposal, but no servants. Whatever is said here is secret, and I hope it remains so." The hardness in his eye implies that there will be consequences for noncompliance, probably of the unpleasant type...

"Rasputin, Udo, let me introduce you to my close advisors, General Dromer Arvallen - Commander of the Guard Corps, Lady Meurise Greft - Treasurer of the Realm, Lord Ante Grisur - High Judge of the Realm, and of course, Lord Adhemar Lagrut - Head of the Parliament."

Udo nods to everyone, holding it a second more in the case of the Lady Greft. Lord Lagrut being acknowleged last, smiles and says, "We have been expecting you."

Before Udo can reply, Tungel says in a louder voice, "Gentlemen, please be seated, so we can start our meeting..."

Rasputin's mouth is cottony after his performance and slakes his thirst with a cold cup of water. He finds a eat next to Udo and addresses the gathered luminaries "My Lady" he slightly bows, "Gentlemen", he nods to each in turn,"it is my pleasure to meet each of you." Peel waves his Holiness to take his seat. "We will soon find out how much you appreciate our aquaintance after we have shown you our present situation" remarks the stern Lord Lagrut. "Enough!" says Peel as he reaches for a scrolled map. He unrolls it and places goblets on the corners to hold it in place. "Udo, I would like your opinion on this tactical scenario."

Udo von Krieg
02-24-2009, 12:31 PM
Udo contemplates the map, which is quite detailed. It shows a portion of land with a river border with Tungel's domains, marked as Ferian River. Three passes are marked over the Ferian, one leading to a vast forest flanked by mountains on the east. the other leads to a city marked as Kiner, on the upper shore of the Ferian where it starts to broaden, and last the road that leads to Giann, which apperas to be a main city or capital.

Between Kiner and Giann, there is a vast plain, with some hills and minor towns. To the east, the forest is close to the city.

The main problem seems to be the prescence of two frontlines, one that has isolated Kiner from the capital, marked with the signs of 2 cavalry legions and 3 heavy infantry corps. The other has cut the road south, effectively isolating Giann and is marked as 3 cavalry legions and an auxiliary infantry corps, likely to be a mercenary outfit. In all the forces present are at least 900 horsemen and 2000 soldiers.

Udo says, " I assume this is the latest status reports you have. I don´t know the size of the Guard Corps, but the enemy has a substantial prescence. Can the cities hold a siege? However, I do not see that this force deployment is aimed at conquering the cities.

I would expect them to keep the cities isolated, while they cross the border into your lands. That would give them control of the Ferian, a harbour, a single battle front and ample wood and grain resources for an extended conflict."

Udo looks into General Arvallen's face and asks " Do they have Heavy Cavalry? What do you know about their soldiers? Who is commanding them?"

Rasputin the Rover
02-24-2009, 06:10 PM
Arvallen frowns and stabs his finger at the map at the force outside Kiner. "The commanding officer is the nephew of Emporer Nicephorus II, otherwise known as the 'Pale Death of the Saracens'. The brat's name is Prince Herpes and we believe he is scouting new lands for the Emperor's 'Conquest of the Year' campaign. If we can bloody his nose Pale Death may select someone else to pick on. This report came during dinner so it is my most recent update. They have no heavy calvary but their spearmen and archers are quite formidable. Their use of falcons also has been of concern. Our allies in Kiner and Giann can withstand any siege this rabble can muster. Our Corps under my command has 2 heavy calvary battalions, one here and one at Kiner, 1 light calvary battalion at Giann. We have 6 companies of long bowmen, 3 here, 2 at Giann and 1 at Kiner. There are also 2 battalions of heavy infantry here and at Giann. Sadly, there is only one heavy infantry battalion at Kiner. Do you think a plan to intercept them prior to crossing the Ferian would work? If we only knew which crossing they favor?"

Rasputin, watching the military masterminds at work wonders aloud "Is this the mission you had in mind for us Peel?"

Tungel grins broadly, "As you can see, we are in the horn of a dilemma."

Udo von Krieg
02-25-2009, 05:53 PM
Udo absorbs the information about troops, and says, " In my - humble - opinion, General Arvallen, I would send your heavy cavalry to mantain their forces split. Raids from the cities should unbalance their supply lines.

If you can make a wedge between their armies, I would suggest to use the eastern ford over the Ferian to send your bowmen through the woods. That should keep the falcons under control, and the enemy would be flanked before they can react. If the armies between the forest and Giann are contained within this pincer movement, they will be crushed against your Heavy Horsemen. If victory should come, their escape must be closed by the Heavy Infantry at Giann. Kiner's garrison would be the reserve force. Only after this events should they oppose the invading army, with your Heavy cavalry cutting their retreat.

After that, it would be a rollup to force the second Herpes army into the Ferian. A swim or die situation."

Udo pauses to drink from his goblet, a very good white wine. "But of course, all this you may have already surmised and planned. As Rasputin correctly points out, you outlined a different task for us. Will you gentlemen please be explicit about it ?"

Rasputin the Rover

Arvallen grunts while scratching his chin and nodding his head. "My thinking precisely Udo, great minds think alike eh?" He smiles broadly and slaps Udo on the back, "By God, I'm going to order my Brigadier's to make ready at once!" He salutes Peel, shakes hands all around and dismisses himself.

Peel laughs and says "That man makes up his mind and that's the end of discussion. I trust him implicitly with our security and he has never let me down. Thanks for you input Udo, its always good to get another perspective." He then looks to Rasp and says "My mission for you two, if you choose to accept it, is to ride to Kiner and see what has happened to Lord Verniere. I have not had a dispatch from him in two weeks and that is most unlike him. He must be alerted to our activities here and advised of his responsibilities in this effort. I fear he has come to harm even though my scouts have no reports of a direct assault. I will give you papers with my seal that will announce you as my emissaries and allow you entrance to his castle without question. I cannot send any of my men with you as it would bring attention to your mission. Stealth and anonymity will be your best asset in reaching the castle gates. After finding out what is going on there, send me a dispatch. Will you men accept my request? I will give you each a Legendary Critical Ring of Rhynn for your service."

His Holiness requires but a second to agree. Rasp says "Udo is his own man Peel, he can answer for himself."

Lady Greft says "I will go to the Treasury and get the Rings. I will return shortly."

Lord Grisur interjects "The paperwork will be on your desk within the hour for your signature and seal Mr. Tungel." He waves and departs.

Lord Lagrut is silent and seems to be contemplating something. He makes no effort to join the discussion.

Rasputin now takes a seat next to Lagrut and says "What did you mean earlier when you said you were expecting us?"

Udo von Krieg
02-27-2009, 09:08 AM
Lagrut is startled, but he composes himself rapidly, saying, with a too friendly smile, " Oh, did I say it that way? I'm sorry, my phrasing was inexact. What I meant was that we were expecting the release of Catella, so dear to us all. We had reports of two riders approaching Groobe's lair. We hoped for the best, and our prayers were answered. "

Meanwhile, Udo approaches Tungel and says, " I accept your offer. I will assume that what we discussed here is the battle plan to be executed, when I brief Kiner's commanders - unless you think it inconvenient."

Tungel nods, and answers, " Thank you. You will recieve my final word when you leave. "

Udo turns to the table, and seems to be peeling an apple. Turning, he approaches Rasputin and Lagrut and he offers the latter the fruit. When Lagrut looks at the apple, he sees that Udo has carved the sign of the Coven, along with a rune that means " Truth ". Before he can take it, Udo bites off the carving; munching on it and winking at Rasputin, he says, " Well ? "

Lagrut, his face inflamed, glowers at Udo, all courtesy gone. He rises and speaking to Tungel, says " My Lord, with your permission, I will prepare a message from the Parliament to express our support for Lord Verniere in this trying circumstances. Will you gentlemen come with me for a short while ? " Tungel nods, abstracted in the reading of some report that a servant has brought recently. Lord Lagrut, once again his diplomatic self, opens the door and says, " This way, my friends..."

Rasputin becomes curious as to the meaning of Udo's exchange with Lagrut. He bows to Peel and exits following Udo and Lagrut.

Out in the hall, Rasputin looks to his companions and says "Will someone explain what in the Sam Hill is going on here? Lord Lagrut, I have a feeling you are keeping something from us that is very important. If we are to aide your cause, I must insist that you be an honest broker of pertinent information. My friend Udo seems to have taken a keen interest in you personally. In my experience, that means I am about to be enlightened."

Lagrut motions with his hand asking them to follow. After a turn in the corridor, they are ushered into Lagrut's quarters. A sparsely decorated place, with lots of documents stacked on wall shelves. Udo quietly loosens a dagger while pretending to straighten his clothes. Taking the initiative, Udo states a fact. " We have met before, Lord Lagrut. You are one of the Masters of the Arteaga Beytia. There are acolytes of the Coven in this court, yet you asked for caution. Explain yourself."

Lagrut hesitates for a second...then he speaks, " Yes, it is true. We have met before. You are the destitute heir of Als-Krieg, former Guardian of Mahacto, called Wulfden, the Mad Wolf by your comrades. We were interested in the outcome of that particular conflict, as I recall...

- You were so interested, that you brought the Blackweed to our regiment ! Did you ever saw the results ? DID YOU ? " Udo is glaring at the man as if to burn him to the ground...

" Yes, I actually did. Quite disgusting... But it served its purpose. The kingdom of Unar fell promptly after. The consequences of our indifference would have been much worse. Of course, there was some damage on your side..."

Udo moves suddenly. In a rush, he grabs Lagruts by his robes and places a dagger on his throat. He says in a low but murderous tone..."Listen, son of a rotten witch, all of us were affected, in a year, all were dead but me!! Why ? What were you after ? Talk, or you will die on this spot !"

Lagrut nods, and says "Why? You know why... Most of your comrades abused using the potion. They did not listen to us. They wanted the power of the weed. So they paid. You survived because of your lineage. Remember, you carry the blood of Valsdrahil, the Dragon King who wed Arisseth, them being the ancestors of your house. You are...a bit unhuman, Wulfden. You knew. Don't tell me otherwise.."

Udo glares at the one he knows as Turgal, and changes the subject. "What are you after now? Why here ?"

"We have been active here for a long time. We are not a cult. We worship no gods, nor devils, but care about the balance of things. We have however, a deep knowledge of the nature of this world...and others. Right now, if Herpes is not contained and the lands beyond the Ferian fall, there will be a massacre and the realm will be open to the Great Demon Braidur, the Torturer. We need to stop this. We need you. We were told that you were after Groobe when you left the inn. So I instructed Catella to let herself be imprisoned by that rascal and when contacting you, to return here..."

Rasputin eyes the scumbag Lord Lagrut as if seeing him for the first time. "I have spoken to Udo on the likes of you many times. It has been forwarded to me on good authority that there is a special place in Hades for the likes of you, Lagrut. Your machinations upon our world will do us or you any favors. It is the people of this time and place that make our own destiny. It matters not how you wish to steer or control a given outcome, history and fate have already decided the result. You are fortunate that my friend Udo is in your company at this moment. I will give you this warning but once, if you cross my path again, your ancestors will wish you were never born. This is not a threat, it is a promise, if you interfere with our mission you will wish you never saw my face."

The room is still and all are quiet, then a knock on the door. "Lord Lagrut? Are our distinquished guests with you?" Catella asks.

"Come in dear girl" Rasputin answers.

She enters the room and says "I have been instructed to deliver these rings to you in person. My father said you might be here. Are you two planning to adventure without me?"

Rasputin respectfully accepts his ring and adds "Catella, Udo and I could not possibly accept your addition to our mission. It is dangerous enough for the both of us. Your accompaniment would only hazard our journey. We are used to watching each others back, your's would be quite burdensome."

"Pish-tosh" Catella replies, "I am a skilled rider and nefarious in disguises and slight of hand tricks. You can utilize my skill in any number of ways. I must see you to Kiner."

I do not doubt the threat that has been described is real. As for our regal company, she may be helpful...we need a cook, you are not gifted for that task." Before Catella replies, he adds, "Let's return to Tungel's quarters. With your leave, Lord Lagrut..." Udo pauses to pick his ring, and puts it on. It burns for a moment, then a tingling warmth passes through his body. After that, he nods at Rasputin, leaving Lagrut inside...As they go along the corridor, he says softly to his Holiness, "Thanks for the support. He will tell me more when we come back, even if the answers come with a piece of his rotten hide..."

"As you wish, Udo. That creep makes my blood boil. I would as soon blast him back where he came from as look at him. I suppose we could use the feisty lass to keep us well provisioned. Her local knowledge will be of use. I am looking forward to her slight of hand displays and can only imagine her disguises."

Catella laughs heartily, "You old foolish man. I will save your life more than once before this mission is completed."

Rasputin rolls his eyes, "Udo, this could be one of our more memorable excursions."

The threesome return to Tungel's office and enter an empty room. Catella says "My father went to chat with the General and his staff, he will return momentarily."

Lord Grisur enters the office with a sheaf of papers, a candle and seal. He places them on Tungel's desk. "I have just finished with your emissary paperwork. We only need Peel's signature and seal. You will then be free to leave on your mission to Kiner at your convenience."

At that moment Tungel and General Arvallen enter. Peel says "Lord Grisur, the paperwork is ready, I assume." He crosses to his desk and looks at the papers. "Excellent, these will do nicely, thank you for your quick work." He signs then seals the documents and gives on each to Udo and Rasputin. "There you have your travel documents to get you in the Castle at Kiner."

Udo takes the documents. reads them thoroughly and satisfied, hands them to Rasputin.

Turning to Peel, he says, "Noble Tungel, do you have any other request or message for us to convey to Kiner ? Any communications from you, General ? We must see to our gear and prepare for depature. Just three hours are left before sunrise. There are some items I will require from your Quartermaster."

At that time Lord Lagrut appears again in the room, and with the most courtly manner, he says, " We wish you the best fortunes in your mission. We will not forget your...dedication." When uttering his last words, Udo notices he is forcefully staring at Catella. A quick glance shows him the girl is watching her mentor...so he keeps quiet, saying dryly, "We will return. I look forward to continue our conversation, m'lord."

Peel is deep in thought and then replies "You men be on your guard. As I said earlier we have no word from Kiner. There may be trouble. We will need night raids on Herpes flank to keep him occupied."

"Yes" General Arvallen interjects, "keep them well harassed. I will be sending the bowmen at dusk to aide you. My heavy horse and heavy infantry will leave mid-morning to keep the invader's armies divided. Udo, you have my complete confidence to run any maneuver you deem helpful to our cause. Here, take this scroll. It gives you my permission to command my forces until such time as I relieve you."

Rasputin rolls his eyes, chuckles and says, "Now you've done it General, you have unleashed a whirlwind. I hope to dine with you again without missing any digits or faculties. If you will excuse us, it is past my bedtime."

The General clasps Udo's shoulder in familiar military fashion, "My Quartermaster has been ordered to fit you out in any way our means can provide. Her name is Peaches and she will see you before you leave. Go now get some rest. You two have a big job to do."

Rasputin and Udo follow Catella to a pair of palatial suites fit for esteemed guests. Rasputin walks to his bed, lies down and begins snoring within 20 seconds.

Catella says to Udo, "Now that is one tired Holy Man!" She laughs loudly and saunters down the hall waving her hand. "I'll be back in 2 hours."

Udo walks into the room, feeling very tired. A small table has some wine and cheese, so hetakes a bit while checking the size and quality of the bed. Regretting he only has two hours, he sits on the bed. There is a big mirror in front of the bed, covered by a cloth. Udo is curious instantly, and he walks to the mirror, taking the cloth in his left hand. Looking still at the decoration of the room, he absently uncovers it and then turns to look...

Five red eyes stare out of the mirror...Udo is so startled that he jumps back, tumbling over the bed, trying desperately to get some weapon out, but he falls over the other side of the bed. Standing up, ready to cry out, he sees the apparition is reflecting his movements...

As he walks back to the mirros, so does the creature...a powerful looking being that has a striped brown and black skin, scaled , but with fur on the back and shoulders, a feline grace of movement and thick, sharp claws. The face, with the five eyes set on top of a predator snout, portruding and pointed fangs set in a thick jaw...

Udo hears a voice, unpleasant, grating but crystal clear in his head. "Comst, maggot ! Master commands we talk! Now!!

- What are you?

- A servant. We servs Master! Glory to Master! Comst now!!

- Why are you in the mirror?

- We servs Master! We hate sin! You sin, you die! You askt questions! Master commands me answer...

- What questions?

- Blackwid. You comst to us. We answered. You open the way here. Braidur is coming!

- Who is Braidur?

- Traitor! Wants to conquer Master! Must not come! You not fall to him! He wants you! Needs you! Dragon blood...

- Needs me? What for?

- Do not surrender to him...Kill yourself!

- I...I...don't understand you!

- Comst near, maggot..give hand..."

Udo extends his hand to the image. When touching the cold surface, a flash suddenly fills the room. Graet pain lacing his arm, Udo recoils to see that a shiny, silverish bracelet has been placed in the wrist, carven with crude runes.

" If you call, we comst, maggot..." with this words, the apparition vanishes, leaving Udo staring into his own bewildered reflection...

Udo turns, and after two limps steps, falls face down into the bed, and hopefully, sleeps...

Catella arrives seemingly minutes after showing Rasputin to his room. "Time to ride your Holiness! Your mounts are more rested than you and Udo I'm afraid. We are to break fast in 5 minutes. I will wake Udo and meet you in the kitchen. After a quick meal we will visit the quartermaster and depart. Don't keep us waiting as the morning mist over the Ferian is a sight to behold! I am looking forward to our adventure to Kiner." Catella leaves the doorway and begins to awaken Udo.

Rasputin arises from his bed feeling only slightly better than when he passed out upon it. He rubs his eyes and yawns. He walks to the wash basin next to the balcony doors and splashes his face with water. After toweling off he steps to the balcony doors and opens them. A cool moist breeze freshens his face as he looks to the east. The sun is just beginning to crest the horizon. He looks to the heavens and with arms uplifted he says "Thank you Father for giving me another day to do your will. Do with me what you must and know that above all, I am grateful. I am forever your son, Amen." Rasputin turns and makes his way to the kitchen, which is easy to do as the aroma of bacon and eggs increases with its proximity. At the entrance to the kitchen Rasputin looks in and beholds a beautiful woman of middle years tending a skillet. "Ahh, the Holy One, I hope you appreciate scrambled eggs and bacon" says the tall, lithe brunette with ice blue eyes. She has an easy smile and a twinkle that reminds Rasputin of his days as a young man when such a woman could lure him into hours of passion. She raises her spatula and points to a table with a pair of benches. "Please have a seat while I get you some tea" she says.

"You are a vision to this lonesome traveler my lady, and your menu will be most welcome to my well being" Rasputin says by way of thanks.

She comes to the table with steaming cup of tea and places it before Rasputin. "My name is Tona. I have heard you are a traveller with unique abilities. I also know you are leaving with Catella this morning on a mission of great import. Would you do me the pleasure of looking in on me upon your return. We do not get many men of your ilk in these parts."

Rasputin bashfully smiles while taking a drink of his delicious green tea. "Now that would depend on how well your bacon and eggs are prepared my fair lady." He smiles and winks while grabbing her fingers and kissing her hand.

Udo hears Catella's call and answers "Coming !" After using the chamberpot, he pours a jug of cold water over his aching head. Opening the door, he follows Catella to the kitchen, stomach growling all the way.

Taking the empty seat besides Rasputin, a sorry looking Udo smiles at the girl Tona, saying " I'll take double portions, Lass, I'm famished." When she turns, he eyes the maid appreciatevely and winks to his Holiness.

Tona returns with a heavily laden plate of bacon and eggs, bread and honey, watered wine and milk. Putting all in front of the barbarian, she smiles again at Rasputin. Udo tries hard not to laugh, in case he may choke between mouthfuls.

When his stomach has calmed a bit, Udo leans over to Rasputin, and in a quiet voice, tells all about his night encounter. When finished, he shows the bracelet to Rasputin. It fits snugly, and would not pass the wrist. " It looks strange indeed. What do you think ? I've got the feeling that there is more at stake here than we ever believed...."

Rasputin eyes Udo's bracelet while wolfing his bacon and eggs. "That metal looks to be Erbium. It is mined in the far north. The runes are unfamiliar to me. Maybe Lagrut would recognize them. He seems to know more than he is telling us. Your vision was definitely a warning. We will only know more with time. Let us be on our way and rid this land of Herpes!" Rasputin wipes his mouth with a napkin, finishes his tea and reaches for Tona and gives her a kiss.

Tona smiles and says "Does this mean you will call on me when you return?"

Rasputin laughs and says "Fair lady, I can only promise IF. A Rover never knows where he will be or when he will be there. If I return, it would please me to spend more time together." He kisses her more passionately this time. He reaches into a pocket inside his robe and taking her hand, he places a blue saphire necklace in it. "That stone matches your eyes. Think of me when you wear it."

He looks to Udo and says, "Let's go see what toys Peaches has for us." He breaks Tona's embrace and blows her a kiss as he walks out her kitchen door.

Udo follows Rasputin into the yard. Sitting in the shade of a tree, a woman gestures for them to approach. When they approach, she stands, a strong, very well shaped woman, with an aura of command. Curly brown hair flows to her shoulders, pale green eyes staring from a beatiful but hard face. A knife scar across the left cheek adds to the impression of toughness.

" So at last you come ! I have an army corps to support, that does not include being an innkeeper ! Which of you two wanted to request supplies, eh ? I guess it must be you, the filthy barbarian, right ? "

Udo makes a deep bow, enjoying himself. " I never have been more impressed by the just combination of beauty and charm you present, milady. May you be the one called Peaches ? " Looking at the woman's cleavage, Udo can imagine where the name comes from...

" Yes, that's me. Peaches ! Ha! None of the dung-brained idiots in this army can say my name, that's why. It is Erythdyngarë, if you care to know..."

"Ah, yes, I know...it means Splendid Flame. A fitting name, if I may add "

Peaches is surprised by Udo's remark. " Where do you come from ? "

"Als-Krieg. By your name, you come from the Ashiral steppes."

"Well, well, isn't this a welcome surprise...It's been quite a long time since I met anyone from the barbarian kingdoms. Forgive my temper, what do you require ?"

Udo turns and winks to Rasputin, and says " Lead us to the barracks, we will need camp supplies, dried meat, blankets, but we need to check your armory."

Catella goes into the dry goods section of the the barracks while Rasp and Udo follow Peaches into the armory. "My, what a large assortment of arrows. Is that a kitchen knife there on the second shelf? That bastard sword looks like it was used to carve the stone for the castle." Rasp looks to Udo and rolls his eyes.

"That is exactly what we want unauthorized personnel to believe" Erythdyngare says with a grin. She walks to a corner with a loose hook on the wall. She turns the hook a quarter turn and pulls open a panel then waves for Udo and Rasputin to follow. Past the threshold is another larger room filled floor to ceiling with the finest collection of warcraft Rasputin has ever witnessed.

"Now this is what I'm talking about" Rasputin says while smiling profusely.

Udo's grin is wide as the Ferian at this moment, looking at the variety and quality of the weapons and armor, feeling like a child in a toy shop...

"Wow ! A Siburi saber ! One of these almost took my head once! and a matching armor set !...mmm, long bows, short bows, aaahh, so many tools, so little time..."

Peaches just stares at Udo, with an expression of wonder at his enthusiasm, then says, "Hey, guriyë, where you got that bracelet ? " Udo stops his babbling, blushing crimson red, and turning at the woman that has just called him "little kid" in her impossible language, and says, trying to sound professional: " Well, er... it's a long story. It's a...gift."

"The metal looks familiar, come over here..." Erythdyngarë moves gracefully to a niche in the racks, taking out a long knife she handles to Udo. Taken out of the seath, it turns to be a dagger, razor sharp, but does not reflect the light.

Udo is turning the weapon when she adds, "Perfect balance, flies true to the mark. It cuts through every metal we tested, even adamantium. But it's really an ugly thing." Quite true, Udo thinks while looking at the handle. The runes crudely carved in it are identical to the bracelet ones. With no more words, he puts the dagger in his boot holster. It fits comfortably.

"I did not say take it, mind you !" Peaches is frowning at the barbarian, but Udo takes out Arvallen's papers and hands them to her, saying. " I'm a Commanding Officer of this Corps. Read for yourself "

The woman reads and gives back the papers, salutes and says, pale as a ghost..." Yes sir! I apologize for..."

"Don't give me any Yessir crap, Peaches. I don't know if I'll live to see you again, which I look forward to..."

Now it's Peaches turn to blush, smiling like a young girl. "Shall we move on ?"

Time is pressing now, so Udo says, " Get me a standard set of broadhead arrows, flight arrows and five medium throwing knives, please" While Peaches is going around, Udo picks a dull black chain mail shirt, and a broad, double handed, curved saber with the necessary straps to hang from his saddle. Going back to the entrance, he sees Rasputin looking at the staves and blunts, and he calls to him, as Peaches approaches with his request, " Are you done, you Holimess? Time is short! "

Rasputin looks over the plethora of weapons and wishes his magical ability allowed for some dexterity with hand weapons. He walks to a large closet and opens the twin doors. Inside is a magnificent collection of mastery, debuff and spell writings. He quickly scans the library and finds a Holy Magic writing he has not seen before. He quickly reads the parchment three times to commit the spell to memory and returns the parchment to its assigned nook.
"I have been most satisfactorily enlightened General, I am ready to partake in our mission at your command."

Udo looks into the face of Erythdyngarë, hearing one of the verses of the War Prayer of the Ashiral tribes. It shows she is of High Clan birth, since only nobles have religious duties in her distant lands.

Grasping her hand, he answers with the proper response, which he learned a long time ago, as a boy..." May peace come to his heart and strength to his spirit. " He smiles to the woman, nods his head and says. "Thank you. I will not forget."

He takes out his own dagger and gives it to her, a warrior's gift to another. " My brother gave me this. Keep it while I'm gone." Seeing emotion in her eyes, he averts his gaze while he hears her voice thanking him, disengaging himself from past and foolish hopes. "Goodbye, Ainath Gëwi " Peaches blushes, smiles and returns to the Armory.

When he takes the quiver, he notices it has the same Rune of the bow he picked at Groobe's lair. She must have seen it among his gear.

"Well, Holy One, let us join Catella and jump into the fire..." after a few steps, he says to Rasputin, " You are quite lucky to be in the company of a lad as handsome as myself, huh? "

Rasputin chuckles, "Yes, we make quite a pair." They leave the barracks in high spirits and enter the courtyard where Catella is waiting mounted on a dappled mare. She is holding the reins of Geryddwen, Danger, and a pack horse. Danger lets out a loud whinnie and tosses his mane while Geryddwen snorts and paws the ground. They look well rested and are clearly happy to see their masters.

Rasputin nods to Catella and mounts Danger. "I am guessing you are provisioned and ready."

Udo walks to his horse, patting it, making sure he's fit for the journey. His saddle and weapons have been dusted and oiled, but he double checks anyway, listening to the exchange between his companions. Satisfied with the results, he takes the reins of Gheryddwen and mounts.

Looking at Catella, he says softly, "Let us join General Arvallen at the Ferian, shall we? "

Udo von Krieg

The view of the Ferian river is peaceful, filled with the beauty of Nature. A fresh breeze comes from the north, making small ripples on the water surface, which come to the pebble covered banks with a musical, rythmic sound. Udo is enjoying the moment, listening to the birds and the even steps of his horse. The freshly greased leather of the saddle, straps and reins make only the faintest of sounds, silence being a necessary thing in the coming events.

The presence of the Armed Corps is noticeable before being visible, the smell of horse and soldiers mingled in the coming breeze, after which the small sounds of the camp are heard.

Arriving at the moorings of the ford, they are greeted by the sight of the camped army. The sentinels point their spears at them, but they relax when they notice Catella. Udo calls to the one next to him, a young, stocky man with red hair, " Good morning, Soldier, can you lead us to General Arvallen's quarters? "

"General Arvallen has no time for your likes, Merc. Anyway, he's not around "

"Very well, who is your Commanding Officer ?" Udo's tone is cold and neutral.

"Captain-Major Ulain Negerev; now, who's asking ? "

" The new Commanding Officer, lad. Take us to his tent. "

" If this is a joke, he will take your hide, Merc. "

"Take care of yours, young friend. Because of your delicate manners, I've just decided that I will make sure you will be in the front ranks at the coming battle. We will see then which hide is lost first, right? "

The kid is red with a mix of anger and fear, but he turns and goes in the direction of one of the big tents at the camp's rear.

"Lousy discipline. He's never been in battle", Udo comments to Rasputin and Catella, watching the soldier as he walks away.

Rasputin nods and says "Every army is blessed with a large percentage of green horns. Gung-ho men of action who are itching for excitement. It would be interesting to talk with him after battle and see if his disposition changes."

Catella, Udo and Rasputin are led to the field commander's tent. They dismount and tether the horses. A red and purple banner with the face of a snarling wolf imposed on the field is posted outside the door on a large spear. Inside is a large table with men surrounding it. They are all eating sandwiches of dark bread and pulled pork. All eyes turn to the new arrivals.

Catella, hands on her hips says "Where is Negerev?"

"Here, my lady!" A tall, handsome man in his 30's breaks from the table. He has a scar from the bottom of his right eye to the top of his lip under his nose. "We were not told to expect you. How may I be of service?"

"Let me introduce you to our new allies, Udo von Kreig and Rasputin the Rover. Udo has some documents to show you." She then motions to Udo.

Negerev eyes Udo up and down. "A man of war, I can see. But your friend is a Holy man. A man of war and a Holy man? It is not natural that you are friends."

Rasputin comes forward "I ain't always Holy, and he ain't always at war. But I always can count on Udo to get me out of a jam. That's what friends do."

Udo smiles, looking far away while Rasputin speaks. He is listening to Negerev's voice, looking for hints of anxiety or disgust. None are apparent in the officer, so he sticks to his original plan.

" We have seen a lot, both of us. Some good memories, some bad ones, and some hopefully forgotten. By the way Rasp, I would require from you to avoid displaying your musical talent. It would distract these good men from the task at hand."

Approaching Negerev, he salutes the officer, clasping hand and forearm in the free cavalry manner. " Captain-Major, please read these documents, which surely you will find as remarkable as I have."

The officer goes through the documents, while Udo notices he is specially careful in checking the legal forms, seals and signatures. when he finishes, the surprise is evident in his face, but keeps his composture, which increases Udo's respect for the younger man's professional demeanor.

" I am honored to be your Second in Command, General. I will order an immediate inspection of the troops, for your benefit. " Negerev's is testing Udo in a covert fashion, preserving his honor while trying to cope with the new situation.

" Ulain, lets us dispense with all this useless dance. I do not have the time or the disposition to play the peacock in a parade. I apologize for my lack of proper garments and suitable entourage, but only yesterday I was a hired killer. Time is critical. If your troops are trained and ready they will have a chance. If not, they will die uselessly. I will not take that burden for myself, since it belongs to you and your high command...as to your men, they have a good commander. No need to change that. Now brief me on the situation "

Ulain studies Udo's face, silently. Then he relaxes a bit, saying: " General Arvallen has told me that we will support the counteroffensive on the Hepes horde. We will smash from the rear when the Kiner garrison attacks.
We must hurry to the eastern slopes on the plains of Levorn, three days from now. Confirmation of the attack will be sent to us when it is inminent. No prisoners to be taken." Negerev's voice is particularly edgy upon the last sentence.

"Yes, that will be our task. My only request is to detach a cohort of infantry and two archer cohorts and station them within the forests east of Levorn. They will act as a reserve, to cut the enemy's disbanding. No prisoners."

" Aye, General. It will be done. Specially your last order."

" I'm starting to like you, Captain. Two more things."

" Of course. "

" Give us half a day before you cross your troops. Second, Feign disorder and complain about your orders, where you can be heard. "

" Surely, but why? "

" Our movements must not be associated to you. Second, I want Herpes spies to be misled as to your resolve. "

" Excuse, me, with all due respect, there are no traitors in this army, sir! "

" Of course. Consider it part of my eccentric command style. But do it." Udo's tone leaves no space for argument.

"Anything else, sir ? "

" Yes. Put the sentinel that challenged us today in charge of his squad. Then assign his regiment to the first line on the day of the battle. "

From the corner of his eye, Udo sees Catella shake her head in disbelief, but fortunately, she stays silent.

"That will be all, Captain-Major Ulain Negerev. You can carry on. See you in battle." Udo nods to Negerev, turns around and walks to the side of Rasputin, saying in a low voice. " See? I am as charming as ever, old friend... "

"Sending that unfortunate, guileless jackal to the front was especially charming my friend. Putting his life where his mouth is may make a soldier of him yet. May I recommend we luncheon before we ride on and save ourselves a meal preparation. I will indeed quarter my musical instruments for a later time as this audience may not appreciate my particular skill."

Catella moves to a corner table and orders the cook to bring a large platter of sandwiches and a pitcher of tea with cups. "I am eager to see my schoolmate Princess Finola. It is entirely possible that we will encounter one of her pets as we near Kiner. She is a most remarkable Druid with an ability to communicate through wild animals. Hopefully, we will get an up to date situation report regarding Herpes' army activity. It would help us to know where along our trail to expect the enemy's scouting parties."

His Holiness looks to Udo and smiles. "It seems our travel companion may have more use to us than just fixing our meals. It is my hope we arrive in Kiner unmolested and fully able to carry out our mission. I propose we travel in the guise of a wandering minstel and magic show. If we are challenged we can obfuscate our true mission by passing off as mere entertainers. What do you think General? If we travel as we normally do, we should be able to avoid undo attention even though Catella may have unsavory admirers."

Udo knows he has been beaten at his own game, so he raises his eyebrows, grins, and says, " Fine. But I will do no juggling with knives now. That marvelous idea of yours almost cost me two fingers last time. I'll just be the bouncer. As to you Catella, we can always get you a Bearded Lady costume and make-up to avoid those unsavory admirers, if you prefer !"

After munching on his sandwich, he says, "As to our route, we can keep close to the Ferian, or move cross-country. I am in favor of a covert approach, so if we keep close to the shore and its forests, we can avoid Herpes scouts. And we'll likely find some of your friend's pets in the woods. What do you think ?"

Rasputin is busily stuffing his face with a sandwich an mumbles "Fine with me." He grabs another sandwich off the platter while still chewing and gulps down some tea. "Excuse my table manners folks but I feel this may be the last pork sandwich for a few days and I admire this cook's seasoning." He begins on his next sandwich.

Catella is unmoved by Rasputin's ravenous display of truly heinous gluttony. She looks to Udo and says, "While a bearded lady would rightly fit amongst you two heathens, I will wait and see if we are challenged before displaying my wares. Juggling is a difficult artform that is not easily mastered." With one cup of tea to her lip, she sips from it and gathers 3 more cups and begins juggling them with one hand. Udo laughs softly, and says, "For your information, lass, His Holiness over there had the Bearded Woman idea. In fact, he made me wear the costumes and pretend the part while we were on a rescue mission...until we got into an inn that was too well lit for the joke. When we finished, the place was completely destroyed, the innkeeper knifed, the hosts gone or killed...and my dress was in tatters...you see, the audience was a little disappointed when I turned to be... well, myself " - now Udo turns to Rasputin - " and all the while you were trying to make your new spell work, remember? The one you misplaced the words? Aah, we were really green as frogs, those days..."

Udo eats another sandwich, downs a big cup of tea, then a second, belches loudly and starts walking to the tent's door. There he starts to look at the skies in the direction of Kiner, where some clouds are staring to gather. "When you are finished, we can cross the ford. I'll be with the horses."

Udo walks to his mount, fitting the newly acquired saber to his saddle. The bow and quiver are strapped firmly, and over his leather duster and leggings, he puts the black mail, fitting the straps and ties with the ease of long experience. Finally daggers and throwing knives are put in place. The hooded cape comes last. Udo pats Gheryddwen and jumps to the saddle, ready to start his mission. He waits for his companions, thinking about his half-elven daughter, whom he has not seen in two years, safe in the Eriwar Monastery.

While leaving the command tent Rasputin salutes the assembled soldiers and remarks "May you fight valiantly and ever remember your Savior in the darkest moments. We will meet again in this life or the hereafter." Rasputin receives a round of salutes as he departs.

Catella mounts her horse and spurs it gently to Udo's side. "Your friend is the devil and divine all in one package. I am at a loss to understand him. I hope I never do."

Danger perks up at Rasputin's proximity and begins to bite the unfortunate private assigned to him. "Let him go son, he is eager to ride." Rasp says to the young lad. The boy of 17 years unhandles the horse and it trots to its masters side. "Quit being a nuisance or I'll put you behind a cart, you boney bag of hay and oats" Rasputin says to his prized possession. He won the young horse in a card game back in Palguin with a lucky inside straight and has grown to appreciate the horse's gait and spirit. While not the fastest of horses, Danger has been the difference on more than a handful of situations between life and death. The old man grabs the reins of his trusted companion and mounts.

Catella and Udo wait patiently as his Holiness saunters up and acknowledges he readiness to proceed.

"Udo, you know how much it pains me to let you lead the way, but seeings as I am the star of the show, I think it wisest for you and her royal personage to lead the parade."

The trio begin their trip to Kiner on a cloudy day with a hint of rain on the breeze. As they cross the bridge over the Ferian River they come to a trail that skirts the river to the east and take it. The trail is in good condition and they make good time. To pass the time and get in some practice, Rasputin takes out his banjo and works on a tune that was popular in his homeland when he was a youth. "I once had a girl, or should I say she once had me.."

Catella looks to Udo and rolls her eyes "He must have been shunned as a boy and whoever gave him that instrument should be hung by their thumbs."

After a period of time, his Holiness puts away his banjo and rides up to Udo. "It looks like that treeline up ahead would provide us fine cover until we get to the forest. The sky is starting to threaten, maybe we should keep a lookout for cover in case it comes a deluge."

Udo is watching the sky as well, the air being heavy with moisture and getting colder, so he says, "I think you're right, Rasp. Let's move into that tree line and keep parallel to the road. "

All the while, he is looking for tracks of game or other, less pleasant company...

After traveling many miles in scattered showers day turns to dusk and the group decide to make camp. "I'll set up the lean-to and work on the campfire" Rasputin says.

Catella begins rummaging through the pack horse saddlebag and produces a large smoked ham and some dried beans. "This ought to be enough for us."

After setting up the shelter, Rasputin eyes a falcon alighting on large elm. It seems to be taking a keen interest in the group's activities. After a few minutes it takes off to the north. "I have a feeling we have just been scouted Udo."

Udo is looking at some very strange tracks going into the thick of the forest..." Hey, will you both come over here, this is something I have never seen..."

Rasputin and Catella come over to Udo's side and observe the markings he is studying. Catella immediately recognizes the tracks as those of the Rompo.

"Udo, these are the tracks of the scavanger of the dead. Rompo's eat the flesh and bones of the dead. While it is not a threat to us while we are living, you can be sure that anyone unburied will be scavanged by this heinous creature.

Rasputin looks at both of his companions and says "If I am smote on the field of battle, please bury my remains so that this creature and its kin forages beyond my grave. My Lord would appreciate it if I arrived in one piece to the sweet by and by. You can be assured that I will do the same for either of you."

Udo hears Catella's description, and says, " I never heard of this creature, but if it follows our tracks, it will eat many times its fill before we're done "

Udo is starting back to his horse, when he notices another group of tracks, farther from the road, in lower ground. He turns around and sees markings of hooves, big and deep. The different sizes are indicating that more than one being has made them. The curious thing is that the earth around the hoofmarks is black and rock hard, as if great heat had been used to mark it. Udo gestures to his companions to come over. Other tracks are deeper into the forest, and seeing them, the mercenary curses and spits on them.

" There is no animal in Aganon that can make this markings. Each one must weigh well over a ton. And they walk on two legs also. Besides, they are either herded by or are guiding a host of Urghai - Orcs, I mean - Any idea ? "

Rasputin the Rover

Rasputin looks over the large hoof marks and says "You are darn tootin those tracks are of a big creature. The stride is over 5 feet and look above us at the freshly broken tree branches. That has to be 10 feet high. If we are to happen upon these guys, I hope its at night and we see them before they see us."

Catella starts passing out ham and beans and puts a jug of water out so Udo and Rasp can fill their cups. "Lets eat quickly and try to get some rest. You two rest while I take first watch." She cleans her plate and then puts oat bags on the horses. She wanders a short distance and finds a stump in a clump of bushes and begins her watch.

Rasputin finishes his meal and takes out a cheroot and lights it. "That girl was sure raised proper. Some youngster will be lucky to win her hand." He pulls his hood down over his eyes and inhales deeply. "I feel pretty good tonight. Most times I'm achy after a day of riding, but not this evening. Hopefully we'll get a good rest. You take next watch and I'll take last."

Udo nods, saying quietly, " Aye, my friend, our fair companion is quite crafty...but always watch your back. I feel that she is also doing some errand for Turgal, the purpose of which...I don't know, for now...Good night."

Udo checks his gear before going to sleep, and after some words to Gheryddwen, he wraps in his cape, to get some sleep.

...Dreams...visions are vividly flashing in his mind...Fire, unearthly flames and awful noises...a field on fire...his hand burns, with no pain...passes...

Udo falls into a deep sleep, at last.

Rasp finishes smoking his cheroot and pulls his blanket tight. He senses the coming day will be full of new challenges. He prays he will have the answers to his Lord's questions and will again sleep at peace.

Catella keeps watch and soon hears the contented breathing of her companions as they gather their reserves. She hears a wolf in the distance howl, displaying dominance of the night and the land. She knows there are fearful creatures in the forest hopeful the hunter does not find them. She can't help but feel as they do....

After about 3 hours of quiet, she moves to Udo's side and says "Rise and guard, General. All is well."

Udo wakes up, yawning, and says, while still in the middle of it "Very well, Cap'n, you're dismissed..." he winks at the girl and gets his short bow and quiver to a spot in the darkness near the trees, wrapping in his still warm cape.

An hour or so passes when a soft rustling is heard close to his post. Udo quiclky sets an arrow to the bow, half drawing, tensing for the shot...suddenly, a ghastly creature, resembling both a small bear and badger, comes into the clearing. The matted fur smells of carrion and faeces, the evil looking snout carrying some piece of woodlike stuff. The animal, that Udo judges to be a Rompo, by the previous descriptions he heard, quickly comes close to him. Then as fast as he appeared, drops his load and turns around into the forest, with a titter-like sound that sends a chill down Udo's back.

Coming close to the dropped log, it feels rigid when the mercenary picks it up, but when he raises it to the firelight, he is assaulted by the awful stench it gives out. Udo almost drops it with disgust, and revolted, looks at it more closely.

A blackened hand, rotting, still carries a seal ring with Kiner's crest cut into an emerald stone. Getting back to the campfire, Udo picks a piece of oiled cloth and wraps the limb into it. Cursing inwardly, he retakes his place until the time to wake up Rasputin.

When his shift has passed, he walks to Rasputin, saying in a hushed voice, "wake up, your Holimess, your turn to watch. Look at the cloth bundle by the fire, it is not pretty nor pleasant. Let me know what you think when I wake. I'm too tired now to think clearly. We'll talk later."

With a clap on the Rover's shoulder, Udo goes again into his wild, visionary dreams...

With a contented yawn and stretch the Holy One rises from his most appreciated undisturbed rest. He pours some leftover tea into a cup and drinks it down. "You rest easy Udo" he says to his friend. He then approaches the fire and opens the bundle. The stench is extreme and he only barely holds in the recently deposited tea. The dissicated hand bears a signet ring on the pinky finger with the Kiner coat of arms engraved in the facet cut emerald stone. Rasputin removes the ring from the hand and examines it closely by the firelight. Engraved on the inner portion of the band it reads "Fear not your duty". He puts the ring in his pouch for safe keeping and decides to question Catella as to whom would bear such an important tribute. He takes the oil cloth with the hand rebundled and buries it, saying a prayer as he does so.

He takes his cape and begins to scout the area careful to keep a close watch on the camp and his companions. In the darkness away from the fire his eyes become more accustomed and he can see perhaps 100 yards. The horses are quiet and the night is still. He hears not a sound but the rhythmic breathing of his companions and the crackle of the camp fire. This is not what he expects because his experience has taught him the night has creatures of its own and they are curiously not present here. He begins to ponder this queer situation....

Rasputin the Rover
04-13-2009, 08:35 PM
Then, out of the corner of his eye he senses movement. He slowly turns to focus his attention and as not to give away his position. He sees a creeping form closing on the camp. It is trying to be so silent as to not disturb the horses. Rasputin can not make out what it is but knows he has not been discovered and begins to circle around the creeper and begins to close in from behind it. The creeper comes into better focus and Rasputin can see its drawn broadsword gleaming in the fire light. He takes out his quarter staff and in a quick cat-like pounce is on top of the form and bashes it in neck and the creeper is still. He quickly grabs the sword and throws it into the camp and begins to tie the hands behind its back and bind its legs together. Rasputin then ties a handkerchief around the head to gag his prey. Picking up the surprisingly light form he carries it into camp and sits it next to the fire. There he closely examines his captive...."My God, he's just a kid!"

Hearing the commotion, Catella and Udo join Rasputin at the fire. Catella is in disbelief, "Why did you manhandle my cousin Plenny so roughly Rasp?"

"Because he likes to sneak up on people with his sword in his hand, that's why!" Rasputin says indignantly. "The little fart shouldn't be so noisy if he didn't want to be manhandled. Oh, by the way, who's ring is this?" Rasputin reaches in his pouch and pulls out the signet ring.

Catella examines the ring and says "That belongs to my Uncle Verniere. Where did you get that?"

"Udo had it delivered." Rasputin starts to unbind the boy and trys to wake him up.

Udo von Krieg
04-14-2009, 12:38 AM
Udo has been watching the interplay with his arms crossed, eyes unfocused in the distance while Catella and Rasputin talk, until the Holy One mentions the ring, starting up as if burned with a burning coal. He looks at Rasputin reproachfully, and when the girl turns to him, he says, as gently as he possibly can, " Girl, I am very sorry...one of the goulish animals you told me about...well...er," - Udo is very uncomfortable to bring such news, but glancing away from Catella, keeps going - " ah...brought it here and left...I mean...he brought your uncle's hand with it, dropped it and run away !"

Seeing the woman's horrified expression, he adds, "b-but it does not mean that he may be dead, I mean...maybe he just lost it in battle, eh ?" Udo finally seems to hear himself, so he just shuts up, shaking his head.

To break up with this awkward situation, he mutters a curse in his own language, and getting a cup of water, he moves to the boy's side and flings the water into his face..." Wake up, bonebag, and start talking !"

Meanwhile he picks the broadsword, a weapon of excellent quality, with some blood traces on the cuting edge and two nicks near the forte of the blade. Looking at Rasputin, he raises his eyebrows in silent questioning...

The smile on the Holy One was devilish. He grabs the boys face and mumbles a minor healing spell. A shock runs through the youngster and his eyes open wide.."What the..?"

Rasputin says "Plenny, you shouldn't oughta sneak up on folks in their sleep carryin' your blade handy..it gives a bad first impression."

The boy sees Udo admiring his sword but says nothing to the merc. He looks to Catella and says "Cousin, I am so glad to see you. If I would have known it was your party at the campsite I would have hailed. I have been on the run since the fall of Kiner and the destruction of the castle. My father and his men tried valiantly to hold off this foreign army, but they have the largest creatures ever seen. They can crush stone and topple walls. It is madness!"

Rasputin says "Wait one minute there sonny, did you say Kiner has fallen?"

The boy looks down and shakes his head.."My father told me to take the sword and flee. I think he knew they had no chance of defending the city and castle. All is lost. All but the blade..."

Catella walks to Udo and says "That is our Great-Grandfather's sword. He used it to build and defend Kiner back in the Black Time. Would you permit me to return it to him? As the heir to Kiner, it rightfully belongs to Plenny."

Not far off from where the group was camped sat a young dwarf. the dwarf was cleaning his daggers.

"on the run again" thought Darciar. "but at least i have a horse this time."

After cleaning the two knives Darciar goes to the saddle bags that had just came into his possesion. He hated killing people but this group had killed enough innocent people and he thought nothing of taking the lives of the couple he could trick away from the camp. and besides he was running out of food and he had to live.

"but what and the hell were those gigantic beasts they had with them!"

Athonese de Courtenay
04-15-2009, 12:36 AM
Some distance away, Athonese lay wrapped in a fur-lined cloak on a pile of leaves in a small cave, its mouth concealed by boughs. Her limbs trembled and her mouth quivered as she fought the demons which troubled her sleep. Image after disturbing image flashed upon her inner eye until Udo appeared like a vengeful God, felling all within his path. A part of Athonese nodded. Yes, this man was a force to be reckoned with; he was no milquetoast, but rather a magnificent male animal. The sleeping Athonese smiled, and her thighs parted slightly, in acquiescence.

Udo nods to Catella, and reversing his grip on the sword, places the tip on his right hand and the pommel on the left, approaches Plenny and presents it to him, " I am sorry for your loss. Bear it with honor and live to pass it to your children. We were late. "

Turning to Catella, he says " Please feed him, Catella, later we can talk about these events."

Udo comes near Rasputin, noticing the wind has changed direction. Since he recieved the demon's bracelet, his senses are a bit sharper than usual, and with the wind, a slight trace of horse smell, farther into the forest.

" Keep ready, my friend. Plenny Bonebag is not the only company we have."

Rasputin the Rover

Plenny is most relieved to get his sword back. Since it is still morning, Catella invites Plenny to rest. Udo distrustfully lays his head on his pillow and Catella starts breakfast. To celebrate her cousin's arrival in camp she decides to make flap jacks. On the outskirts of camp Rasputin looks to the direction Udo has indicated and begins a serpentine course to locate their neighbor.

After half a mile distance from camp the Holiest of Holies comes upon a breadfasting dwarf and his malnourished horse in a cold camp. He quickly hobbles the horse and presents himself in front of the dwarf. "Friend or foe little man, it matters not to me. My companions and I seek to defeat the foreign invaders. While you may be a threat, I give you the benefit of the doubt in these troubled times. Tell me what you are doing in the Kiner forest and what is your name?"

darciar
04-15-2009, 09:53 PM
well first off. i know im little but i dont particularly like to be reminded of it.

second it is unkind in my land to not introduce ones self before asking of anothers name.

third and to answer your first question, you arent dead, i could hear you from a mile away with all the mindless chatter and careless tromping, if i were an enemy you would not have found my camp so easily and you would have a knife sticking out of your back. but i am neither friend nor enemy to you simply someone whom you are now aquaintened to.

and to answer your last question i am looking for someone. i only came to find her because she is distressed. i dont know how i know that but she is an enchanter so i might have a few unknown charms cast on me

Back at the camp, Udo is worried by Rasputin's delay. Getting more and more restless, he drops his cape, approaches Catella and tells her, " I'll go check on his Holimess. If you have to move, travel in the direction of Kiner. I'll return in an hour or less."

Then he takes his dagger out and goes into the forest, silent as death itself.

After a while, he sees Rasputin has moved in the direction of the camp smell. He hears faintly that he is talking to someone, but no violence seems to be going on. He takes a detour to approach the voices by the opposite side...

Passing along his route, he spots a place where a strange prescence is felt...

He keeps his route until he can see both his friend and a dwarf, the latter a bit ragged but with the look of a fighter. No heavy weapons but two daggers that look well kept.

Udo stays in his position, waiting for the pair to take action...

"Now that is the spirit." Rasputin laughs, "If I have offended you I am sorry. These are hard times and chasing females through the forest seems folly to me but then I have recently been bedded.Your horse is in need of feed and could use some rest. Can I offer you aid? My name is Rasputin the Rover, the Holiest of Holies. I am with a party of warriors in route to Kiner or what is left of it. You may ride with us while seeking your enchantress or continue on your own, unmolested by my group. What say you?"

Udo moves through the bushes, when he finds two bodies, with knife wounds on them, some of which show slashing in upwards motion.

It seems that the dwarf fighter knows how to handle himself. Silently, he moves closer to the clearing.

Dont worry warrior show yourself. i saw you earlier. i had been keeping watch. i figured the careless chatterbox would have had some friends out here in such a desolate place... in other words i was looking for you. but had i not been i would not and i would not be in a very good position not would i.

And you, um "father"?? i mean no offence but you dont seem that holy to me. but i would gladly accompany you. that is until i find who i am looking for, then i will make up my mind what i will do. Probably stay with her i guess but that is yet to be decided. and it would greatly be appreciated if you would show me to your camp now. my horse has only been fed what i could find for him to eat.

but i must ask for assistance to your camp. ""Father"... if your bodygaurd would kindly bring those two bags", Darciar points to the two extra saddel bags. "PLease keep your eyes where they wont get cut out warrior." and on that note he starts walking the way rasputin had come from

Udo comes out of concealment, switches his dagger to the left hand and pulls out his hatchet.

"Before I do your bidding, you must pay the proper fare, either gold or steel are taken. I am Udo von Krieg, known as Wulfden. Who are you ? "

The barbarian is quite irritated by the unnecessary bravado of the dwarf, and he moves closer, ready for the kill...

"You must be either a reknowned hero or the greatest fool, since you are outnumbered, hungry, alone, and in dangerous ground. I would remember my manners if I were you...friend"

The cold tone of the last word clearly states Udo's intent...

darciar flips a coin to the burly warrior. there is a downpayment you will get the rest when i am sure none of my belongings are misplaced. and i wouldnt be so quick to judge, and please put down the hatchet before you hurt yourself. you would no sooner get to me before you had a knife in your leg.

Darciar looks to rasputin. Do warriors ever think about thinks like that?they think they can just run into battle swinging their swrod around. humph. darciar again sets off in the direction that rasputin had come from, this time keeping a closer eye on lumberjack man. he keeps wlaking while he thinks to himself, "i wonder how many daggers it would take to drop this fellow. he seems quite capable of taking a bit of damage before stopping. i hope i dont have to find out.

Udo picks the coin, throws it to the dwarf's feet, and says. " Then see to your own baggage. Your weight in gold will not suffice. The price -for you- is steel, whenever you choose to pay. Now follow us. I have some questions for you."

Udo leaves the clearing, cursing in his own language....

"We would be greatly honored if you would not add to your pilfered collection while in our company, Mr. Thief. If you need anything, please ask. I still believe you have not introduced yourself. And please give us some background on your life so that we may find more common interests. You may call me Rasp and that's my good friend Udo. We have known each other a long time and have great mutual respect. Something that is earned in these hard times and not easily given. You would do well not to get on Udo's bad side."

Rasputin looks to Udo and says "This fellow and his horse are alone and in need. With Herpes army about, it would be better to stick together than get in each other's way."

They are getting close to camp. Catella is making ham and potatoes in a skillet over the fire. "Come and eat, there is enough for your prisoner."

Rasputin laughs, "He's not our prisoner, we found him in the woods. He looked like he could use some help." He goes to the pack horse and pulls a sack of oats out and tosses them to the thief. "Give that to your horse, it is fortified. It will be rested and well nourished for today's ride."

Plenny eyes the thief and keeps a hard grip on his sword.

Darciar throws the feed onto his shoulder and heads over to the horse. He cuts a corner of the sack with his dagger and lets the grain flow until there is a hearty pile in front of the horse.

Darciar looks to Udo, "By steel you mean... you would like me to kill people. Correct? Kill them for you, for your benifit?

Darciar looks over to the young man clutching the hilt of the sword and says, "i dont like to kill people. haha and your sword is safe i only kill and steal from people who deserve it. You shouldnt hold that sword so tightly, your fingers are turning white." He chuckles once to himself. "So what do you have to drink with those potatoes?"

Udo eyes the dwarf with mixed feelings. No discipline, no manners...surely no military training, but not a gutter rat, if he tells the truth about his code for stealing...the cynical mercenary has seen his fill of independent right-doers -some zealots, some thieves, most opportunists- all, in the end, hanging from the wrong end of a rope.

"Darciar, at the present I command the forces this side of the Ferian. If by any remote chance you were part of any army corps, regular or mercenary, I'm your commanding officer and you are subject to army rule; such being the case any reluctance on your side will get you charges on treason and desertion, which I surmise you don't want.

If not, you need not take my orders, but I request you answer my questions fully. Out of courstesy for a good drink"

Udo tosses a flask of firewine to the dwarf, and continues,

"I do not need you to kill for me. I can do that by myself. As to your stealing, I will not be the one to judge you. I have done my share of odd jobs, some of which may be frowned upon in most places."

"I gather that those two you killed were involved in the fall of Kiner. Tell us if they were raiders of part of a bigger army. The rightful Lord of the city has told us that some supernatural creatures were with the Herpes armies. I myself spotted some orc tracks, so I guess they also have risen these vermin to their cause. Brief us on what you have seen. Spare no details."

"And finally, We would like to know who are you looking for in this forest. We may be of help."

nono i dont much care for the strick military life and chose a different career path than that. and besides most of the military personel i have come across in all of my traveling have been rather rude. much like a schoolyard bully to take what they want from whoever is around to take it from.

as for who im looking for. well her name is Athonese, i dont pawrticularly know why im looking for her. i havent seen her in years now. but she is a rather skilled enchantress and a mighty fine cook might i add. i felt drawn into these woods... probably by some unknown enchantment that she put on me. and i dont much care for this but she travels with a giant wolf. i forget its name but i really dont care for the beast anyway. dont like wolves you see. they are just fleebitten, goatstealin, human shin, (dwarf face) biting, owergrown dogs.

and as for the two people i found and killed. well i dont know who they were but they had caught this little bunny. not even big enough to eat. and i guess if they were demented enought to eat it thats there own agenda but they didnt just wring the bunnys neck they had half of the poor thing skinned alive by the time i realized where the god aweful screeches that were keeping me awake were coming from.

i saw that they were with a large party of men, and some beast i couldnt recognise. i suppose they were these orcs that you were talking about. but the only orc i have ever seen lives in the mountains near my village and stands about a foot tall and is a scrawny little things

but therse werent scrawny. they were about 8 feet tall. can you believe it thats like bouble my height. but i lured the sick men away from their friends and would have showed them how sick skinning something alive is if i wouldnt have had the whole party after me. so i slit both of their necks, put the poor creature out of its missery took the saddlebags of the two men, set their horses free and set out on my way to find a new campsite away from the group of men and beast.

and i had been at that campsite not long before the jabbermouth came stumbling upon me

"Well, now that we have that all sorted, I say we ought to go eyeball the situation at Kiner. Let's break camp and put in a hard ride today. We should be able to reach the outskirts by nightfall. Catella, lets divide up the provisions and Plenny can ride the pack horse. Udo, it looks like Daciar ain't no recruit for our military action. Some folk just ain't cut out for warrin'. Maybe he can scout or range while he is in our company? Its gonna be a might interesting and right soon."

will we be passing through the forest? i dont really want to go until what ive came here for. and i never was that much into world geography, meaning i have no idea which way kinnier is. actually to tell the truth i havent ever heard of it. and well about the saddlebags in my possesion well i really dont want to haul them around the whole trip, and i dont think we will be finding anywhere to sell what is in them.

Darciar reaches into one bag and pulls out a big bundle of what appears to be beef and throws it over to the girl, "i suppose you know what best to do with that." He then pulls out a big flask and throws it to Udo, "that is to repay the drink you gave me, i dont much care for it but it did make me feel better after i took a drink." Udo sniffs the bottle and is hit by a wall of very strong smelling alcohol.

Darciar brings the second bigger saddlebag closer to him and reaches inside. "this is for you kid, it looks like it is a better fit for your arm, take it or leave it i have no use for swords. Darciar throws the young boy a short sword about a cubit in lenght. "and the rest looks like medicinal herbs and ointments i guess that goes to you Rasp." and he throws the balled up saddlebag over to Rap.

The dwarf walks off to prepare his posessions for the journey.

the first bag still lay on the ground and in the faint light of morning peaking through the trees you could just barely see the nearly full sack of coins, and jewels that lay there.

"its a pitty to waste so much. that much money would have taken me months to steal somewhere in a town. but i suppose i wont be needing money for a while. that is as long as i stay with this company

Athonese awoke abruptly. The ground trembled slightly as her ear rested against it. Distant riders! Be they friends or foes? Her dream still hovered against the periphery of her consciousness. Was the rumour that virile UDO had a wife true or another product of the idle flapping of tongues? And what of her gran's claim that all men were the same height abed? And that other, more intriguing rumour, that Dwarves were far from stunted in the area which served to delight a woman. Hmmm? Twas almost enough to distract one from the impending arrivals.

Athonese rubbed the last of the sleep from her beautiful eyes and arose, gripping weapons in each capable hand. . . .

Udo raises the flask as in a toast, and drinks a mouthful of the spirits, which feel like liquid fire going down his windpipe..."Aaahhh, by all gods, this really kicks like a mule! " Still coughing from the sip, he grabs the gold bag and gives it to Plenny, saying, " If we succeed in our mission, there will be many widows and orphans to look after. Maybe you can consider it a loan from our new companion, and give him a bill of credit in the name of Kiner's treasury."

Turning to Rasputin, he says, " We should get moving. Let Plenny take us by the most safe route to Kiner. But before, I'd like to go by the clearing I stopped by when I went after you. I felt a presence there, not menacing, but I feel something or someone is over there."

Udo then turns to gather his cape and gear, puts Darciar's flask in his saddlebag, and goes to check if the dwarf's horse is in condition to make the journey. Fortunately, the grain it has taken has improved its spirit, if not its frame.

Satisfied, he rides to stand a bit ahead of the camp in the direction of the grove and its unsolved mystery, waiting for the rest of the group to come over. A feeling of unease is getting on his nerves...

Darciar joins the stout warrior in less thean a minute and the warrior looks over at him inquizitively. Darciar shruggs his shoulders,"never had time to unpack. and besides i travel light." he points at the pouch at his side.

Udos expression changes from one of question to one with more humor in it. (to darciar it never REALLY changed THAT much) and Darciar thinks to himself. 'this relationship might turn into more than traveling companions, possibly even friends.' 'hmmm it seems i dont have many of them... i wonder why?'

The Holy One rides up on the pair followed by Catella and Plenny. "What is it Udo? I never much like it when you get all sensory and such. You have the darnedest intuition or whatever you call it. Should we seek or wait?"

Catella and Plenny look at each other questioningly.

" There is someone at the grove close to Darciar's camp. Let us go there and look for tracks."

Udo approaches Rasputin, and says in a lower voice, " Since I got this bracelet from our...friend, my senses are as if I had a permanent dose of blackweed, a small amount. Not enough to make me insane, but it is irritating. I am also sure the dagger I got from Peaches is linked with this. Let us be on guard."

This said, udo takes the lead out of the camp in the direction of the rock grove.

After a while, Udo reins his horse, dismounts and holds his ear to the ground...

Darciar leans over to Rasputtin and whispers, "is he checking for seismic activity?"

"No Darciar, he senses earthquakes from a different body part that is probably not politely disclosed in mixed company" Rasp chuckles. "I am certain he has sensed another person in this proximity. He will locate them in short order so be on your guard. Sometimes the person does not want to be found, sometimes they are grateful."

Udo rises and jumps to his horse, facing the others. " Riders. at least half a dozen, coming this way. Double-time it to the grove, if necessary we will have our flanks covered. Let's move! "

Whirling, Udo lays heels to Gheryydwen, and sets out at a gallop.

The group follow Udo to the grove and make ready their weapons. They are concealed for ambush if the riders prove to be hostile. All are anxious and holding their breaths when through the trees a banner is seen on the end of a pike. It is dark green with a red eye in the center of the field. Under the banner is a squad of five riders. They are no more than 50 meters away and closing fast. Rasp looks to Udo and nods his head, tightly grasping his staff and starts his spellcasting....

Catella and Plenny are wide eyed and crouched behind a large bush. They are ready to strike...

Darciar had went around to the other side of the advancing riders and notices the banner as the one flying above the camp he visited the other night. he doesnt wait for his fellow travelers to make the first move. he wouldnt draw any attention to them because they were on the opposite side of the grove so he unsheaths a dagger and his longest sharpest knife. He throws the dagger and hits the lead horse right in the chest. "perfect," thought darciar. The horse fell over taking two of the other horses and riders with it. Then before the otehr two riders have time to react Pulls out another dagger while jumping into the clearing.

Udo, seeing that Darciar has engaged, spurs the horse to cover the dwarf's attack, going around to call the attention of the remainig riders, draws his axe to close into the fight. He yells to Darciar, "NO QUARTER !! FINISH 'EM !!"

The rider with the banner swings at him, hitting the mail painfully. The barbarian counters with a swing that guts the enemy, who falls off the horse, bleeding.

Turning, he signs to Rasputin, Catella and Plenny to cut the riders' retreat

Plenny and Catella join Darciar on the unhorsed riders. It is a short melee as all their weapons find their marks. Darciar's speed and lethality is remarkable. Rasputin has chosen a strike spell instead of his normal fire spell. He brings both his hands from over his head and casts them to the remaining rider and unhorses the soldier. Rasputin quickly disables the man with leather straps and gags him with an old sock. "Oh, you will wish you were dead when the taste of that sock hits you", he says to the unconcious rider.

Quickly, the group gathers up the disoriented horses and take stock of the aftermath.

"Well done comrades, that was a thing of beauty" says Plenny. "My grandfather would have been proud." He raises his sword to the sky and drops to one knee. "Kiner will rise again!" he exclaims.
